Tommy Wiseau, Sea Monsters, Chilly Murderers And Madea Abound In A Bunch Of New Movie Trailers

OK, so, the last 53-ish hours have unleashed a deluge of new movie trailers that have each generated a lot of individual thoughts from yours truly. How about we take a gander at some of these various movie trailers, many of which give us our very first glimpses at highly anticipated titles, on this fine afternoon, shall we?

First up, the movie that became a sensation at SXSW this past March that finally has a movie trailer...

THE DISASTER ARTIST
I haven't seen The Room yet (I know, the prospect of me not having seen a culturally impactful movie is shocking) but that didn't stop me from loving this teaser trailer for this raved about James Franco directorial effort. Franco seems to be acing the tiniest bit of physical behavior of Tommy Wiseau here and the scene itself is actually quite funny and well-timed. Not giving too much away while letting one get a clear idea for the tone and atmosphere of what's to come, that's the very idea of a great teaser trailer and that's very much an accurate description of this awesome first look at The Disaster Artist.

THE SNOWMAN
Michael Fassbender's been on a rough patch lately with X-Men: Apocalypse, Assassin's Creed and Alien Covenant but at least his next movie, The Snowman, looks incredibly promising. This is one eerie trailer using a nicely chosen song and effectively done wide shots to convey the sense of dread that this snow-fixated killer is creating for the lead characters of this movie. The brief snippet of J.K. Simmons European accent was unexpected for me at least and the entire trailers effective sense of creeping terror took me by surprise as a matter of fact.

ALPHA
Now where did this one come from? I'd barely heard anything about this one before its trailer premiered yesterday morning but it totally got put on my radar with a well-made trailer like this one. The trailers heavy use of voice-over and title cards suggests they're trying to cover up the fact that it's likely heavily free of dialogue, which is fine by me since the bits of non-speaking action (like the main character trying to give his wolf companion some water) come off really well. It also looks great too and it's no wonder Alpha is immediately on my radar when its trailer has so much epic imagery.

PROFESSOR MARSTON & THE WONDER WOMEN
We finally got ourselves a live-action Wonder Woman movie this summer but how about now we do a movie all about the three folks behind Wonder Woman? The unconventional in its era (and even still unorthodox today) polygamous relationship Professor Marston, Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Olive Byrne looks like it's being set up as the crux for an intriguing looking forbidden romance thriller, one that offers Rebecca Hall a woefully rare chance to headline a major motion picture while Luke Evans also looks promising in the lead role, so yes, I'm very much interested in seeing this one.

ONLY THE BRAVE
Lots of macho masculinity in here (I've seen repeated comparisons between this trailer and Peter Berg's work and that feels super accurate), but overall, this first trailer for Only The Brave makes the movie itself look kind of generic but there could be some excitement to be found in this premise in feature-length form, especially with the super talented cast they've assembled. Nice to see Miles Teller is headlining multiple dramas this Fall while more Jeff Bridges is always good (as long as it doesn't involve R.I.P.D.). The trailer for Only The Brave came off as so-so to me but here's to hoping the actual movie turns out better.

BOO 2! A MADEA HALLOWEEN
The first Boo! A Madea Halloween was my first Madea movie and it was bland and poorly made enough to not make me want to check out further entries in the series. This teaser for further Halloween-tinged Madea antics just looks like more unfunny and forgettable cinema, especially with a weird explicit reference to Get Out that closes the trailer. This October, I think I'll just stay home and munch on some Milky Ways instead of giving this one a watch.

THE SHAPE OF WATER
I got to see the trailer for The Shape Of Water on my theatrical screening of War For The Planet Of The Apes last Thursday and found it to be an outstanding trailer then. Rewatching it this morning, I was even more moved by this particular viewing of the trailer, to the point that the moment the French music kicked in I began to get misty-eyed. God, this is an amazing trailer, showing off the kind of glorious sets and camerawork we've all come to expect from Guillermo Del Toro's work, but the way it lays out the relationship between Sally Hawkins and the sea beast she discovers  really is incredible. In the span of two-and-a-half minutes, both of these individuals are painted with tender humanity that left me emotionally moved. Outstanding trailer, likely one of the best movie trailers we'll see all year and I can't wait to see the super promising looking movie itself this December.

Trailers For New David Ayer And Bong Joon-Ho Movies Give A Peek Into Netflix's Ambitious 2017 Movies Slate

Thus far, Netflix's forays into original cinematic offerings have not been greeted with the same level of audience adoration nor awards attention that their TV fare has. In 2017, it looks like they're very much trying to change that, with practically each week this week bringing some sort of new Netflix movie To boot, those new Netflix feature films are high-profile offerings starring the likes of Lily Collins (To The Bone). Jason Segel & Rooney Mara & Robert Redford (The Discovery), Melissa Leo (The Most Hated Woman In America), Henry Cavill (Sand Castle), Alexander Skarsgard (Mute) and Brad Pitt (War Machine).

New Power Rangers And Logan Trailers Give Audiences A Glimpse At The Superhero Movies Of March 2017

March 2017 is gonna be a jam-packed month for movies, no denying that. We've got the extremely promising looking Kong: Skull Island, that live-action Beauty & The Beast movie (which I really hope offers more new stuff than the trailers suggest), Ben Wheatley's action comedy Free Fire, Jessica Chastain helping save people from Nazi's in The Zookeeper's Wife, the James Gunn-penned horror film The Belko Experiment, Danny Boyle's Trainspotting sequel and....The Boss Baby. Plus, we get two new high-profile live-action superhero movies entitled Logan and Power Rangers.

Both debuted new trailers this morning, so let's take a look at them shall we? First up is....

LOGAN
Is this as good as the first teaser? Of course not. That one's going to become one of all-time greatest trailers ever made if it isn't already. But this is still one spectacular trailer that emphasizes the X-23 and Logan relationship that looks to be the core of the movie as well as reinforcing the melancholy tone that feels appropriate for this final Hugh Jackman Wolverine movie. Also worth noting is how the hand-to-hand combat stuff in this trailer looks exceptionally well-made and I can't wait to see if that holds up throughout the whole feature. Plus, we get to see that X-Men comics exist in this universe and it actually got me kind of wistful to see Logan look at these comics and reminisces about how his adventures with his fellow mutants were never quite like that. Man oh man am I ready for this one!

Next up is....

POWER RANGERS
First, the good news; this is a way better trailer than that dreadful teaser back in October. I actually dig some aspects of the lighter tone here that feels more appropriate for a tale about five teenagers transforming into robot humanoids. Plus, I love Kayne West's Power and it's nice to see that version of the song used here instead of some dark somber cover. I'll also freely admit it's a well put-together trailer that'll probably work mighty fine in enticing general audiences to give this new Power Rangers movie a go. As for me though....I dunno. I honestly think the last 45 seconds of this trailer kinda killed it for me, to be honest. Those new Power Ranger suits just look really really bad and it also just devolves into a bunch of CGI pixels fighting each other. I'm praying to God the actual movie gives some dramatic grounding to all of this mayhem, because if not, that climax could reach Man Of Steel levels of excruciating. So, while this trailers a definite improvement tonally, and there's a good song choice, I'm still really worried about this new take on the Power Rangers. I'm sure Power Rangers fans will go crazy over the appearances of the Zords and Goldar in this trailer (I have no idea what those words mean).

We shall see how both of these actual movies stack up once that jam-packed month of cinema arrives in March.

The First Trailers For The Iron Fist TV Show And The Power Rangers Movie Are Here To Make You Go "Meh"

Two trailers debuted at the New York Comic-Con this weekend that made people everywhere go...."OK". Or maybe that was just me. As a full-on Marvel geek and a guy whose never seen a lick of Power Rangers stuff, these new trailers for the new Iron Fist Netflix show and the new dark n' gritty Power Rangers movie just don't do it for me. How about we go through each trailer and talk about why I'm personally on the fence on both projects, OK?

First off, I wanna apologize real quickly for the slower crawl of content coming out of yours truly lately. The past two months have been a whirlwind of activity for me, particularly in the last month when my new semester of college started and has ensured that I've been quite busy with plenty of academic activity. In addition, there's been plenty of personal stuff going on for me, most notably a new exercise regime (this NerdInTheBasement is getting cut!), keeping me from doing as much writing as I'd like to. I don't see an end in sight in terms of my personal business for now, so I just ask for your patience for now. :)

Ranking This Year's Comic-Con Trailers

1. Doctor Strange: Yeah, I'm gonna go with this one as the best (narrowly). The trippy visuals seems like something we haven't seen too much in American cinema as a whole, let alone in a major superhero blockbuster. Plus, Benedict Cumberbatch does look pretty damn awesome in the titular role, not gonna lie. And Mads Mikkelsen as a bad guy? Oh my God, this whole trailer was just two and a half minutes of me thinking "This is real and it looks so beautiful."

2. Wonder Woman: Speaking of things that are finally real and look amazing, how about that Wonder Woman trailer? There was far more color, interesting visual language and personality in this trailer than Man Of Steel and Batman v. Superman combined and Gal Godot looks like she's a perfect choice to play the part of Wonder Woman. The action looks quite great and World War One is a unique environment to set the film in. Really excited for this one, totally has the potential to be something special.

3. The LEGO Batman Movie: This movie looks like so much fun and boy howdy is it nice to have a more light-hearted Batman after a decade plus of various dark and brooding versions of the character. Despite being a kids movie that's also a ninety minute long commercial for LEGO's, it's also got a legitimately interesting thematic conceit for Batman; can he be an effective father-figure to Robin despite his own parental related hang-ups? Really excited for this one and Michael Cera looks to be the Robin of our dreams.

4. Kong: Skull Island: This may have been the biggest surprise of Comic-Con, mainly because nobody really knew what to expect from this new take on King Kong. Turns out, the idea behind this project is to take a 1970's war movie and toss in more fantastical creatures into the mix. Sounds good to me and the trailer made sure to highlight an ominous tones, an all-star cast and a ton of lovely looking visuals. Very interesting stuff and one I'm curious to see more of in the future.

5. Justice League: A whopping 16 months prior to its release, Justice League showed off some footage that emphasized a lighter tone compared to the last two Zack Snyder superhero movies. The more comedic beats were pretty fun, especially Barry Allen and Bruce Wayne bouncing off each other in a moment that delivered both laughs AND character information! Unfortunately, The Flash and Cyborg have some really clunky looking costumes and it's hard to really get excited for this one considering Zack Snyder's absolutely dismal track record with Man Of Steel and especially Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

6. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword: I honestly forgot all about this one until I started writing up this piece. It's a generic looking fantasy movie to a tee, aside from some fast-paced editing at the start that does seem like vintage Guy Ritchie. While the best trailers released at this year's Comic-Con emphasized uniqueness and boldness, the trailer for this new King Arthur adaptation just seemed too derivative of past fantasy adventures to stand out.

The Trailer For Yoga Hosers Is Just The Wurst

Next month, a new film from Kevin Smith will be released. No, it isn't the long-gestating Hit Somebody. No, it isn't Mallrats II; Mallbrats. No, it isn't Clerks III. No, it isn't Moose Jaws. No, it isn't a reincarnated form of Superman Lives. The filmmakers newest feature (and only his second film to carry a PG-13 rating, if I'm not mistaken) is the Canadian horror film Yoga Hosers. It looks...pretty terrible, honestly. Check out the new trailer for it below.

New Animated Movie Trailers Bring Out Singing Koalas And An Idris Elba Voiced Sea Lion

A deluge of family features will be arriving this summer, with the past weekend bringing the first of such films (The Angry Birds Movie) that we'll be seeing by the truckload over the next few months. This weekend brings Alice Through The Looking Glass and the weeks afterwards bring new Ninja Turtles and PIXAR films. And just like with any motion picture, before these family movies come out they're gonna release a trailer to promote themselves. Three of this year's more high-profile family films actually debuted new trailers this week so let's look at 'em now, shall we?

Denzel Washington Is On Horseback, Emily Blunt Is On A Train And Brian De Palma Is On Display In This Batch Of New Movie Trailers

Just as the sun sets, the rivers flow and David DeCoteau directs eight feature films a year, another inevitability has occurred today; new movie trailers have descended from the heavens to deliver new footage of films you may or may not see in the coming months. That's less of a question for me though, I'll almost certainly see all three of these movies. I mean, I saw Fifty Shades Of Black in its theatrical run for Christs sake. At this point, I'll just wander the Earth for the remainder of my days, watching any movie that crosses my path in an attempt sear the memory of films like Sucker Punch from my brain.

Anywho, with that bout of existentialism out of the way, let's look at four new movie trailers!

Marvel Movie News Galore! A Trailer For Doctor Strange, A Title For Spider-Man And A Co-Star For Thor!

The press tour for Captain America: Civil War is well on its way, and whenever an entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has its stars, director and producers on the road promoting a feature, there's bound to be juicy tidbits about future Marvel Cinematic Universe features unveiled, particularly when one is talking to the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige. Don't expect this to be the last time we get a bunch of Marvel news (Civil War is still three weeks away from its domestic release), but for now, I thought I'd compile three particularly noteworthy MCU related news items into one article.

The Trailer For Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Is Here!

It's a Star Wars world, and we're all just living in it. After The Force Awakens broke every box office record in the book, not to mentioning earning acclaim from both moviegoers and critics alike, Disney/Lucasfilm are off on their plan to make a new Star Wars movie every single year. The current plan is for every other year to deliver a traditional Star Wars episode chronicling the tale of Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron, while alternating years will be home to spin-off features that are a "Star Wars Story".

A New BFG Trailer Has Arrived For All Of Us Human Beans to Watch!

Roal Dahl is a trick author to adapt to film. His works were so full of flights of the most fantastical kind of fantasy that it can be difficult for certain filmmakers to adapt such works into cohesive features. Tim Burtons Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, for instance, does not work in any shape or form any way you slice it. As its own thing, it's a repetitive slog sorely lacking in whimsy or fun, while as an adaptation it's borderline infuriating. Like I said, the books of Dahl thrived on the nonsensical and all of that vagary found in the text is tossed aside so that the root of all of Willy Wonka's idiosyncrasies are....daddy issues. His father was dentist ya see. Not only did it go against the spirit of the source material, it was an eye-rolling plot development take in the context of just the film itself. Screw that garbage.

Charge Into Battle With The New Captain America: Civil War Trailer!

Howdy-do everyone! I've been quite busy today,went and finally saw Zootopia today (So good!) and grabbed a bite for lunch, so I haven't had a chance to pop up onto the interwebs. Anything big happen while I was out?

The Trailer For Paul Feig's Ghostbusters Is Here!!

Out of all of this years crop of summer blockbusters, few carry as many question marks as this years Ghostbusters reboot. Can Paul Feig graduate to the realm of summer blockbusters with all the success of Christopher Nolan, the perfunctoryness of Collin Trevorrow or the failure of Marc Webb? Will the new group of Busters (Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones) work well as a team? Will whiny Mens Rights Activists ever shut up about the film "ruining" their childhoods? A trailer for the project has arrived today to answer give us a glimpse into the film that may answerr those questions and more.

A New Finding Dory Trailer Has A Certain Memory Challenged Fish Searching For Her Family

PIXAR has a deluge of sequels to their classic films on the way in the next few years, with the next three years bringing (in order of release) Cars 3, Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles 2. Before all of those films, 2016 will deliver Finding Dory, a follow-up to one of the studios biggest features, Finding Nemo. This time, as the title makes clear, the focus has shifted to scene-stealer Dory (Ellen Degeneres) and her own adventure. A new trailer for the movie has been released today, and you can watch it below.

Trolls, Pets And Kevin Spacey As A Cat Abound In New Family Movie Trailers

With a high profile family film like Kung Fu Panda 3 coming out this Friday, it's to be expected that a number of family films have released trailers in order to get them seen in front of prospective audiences coming out to see Po the Panda. We got four trailers to look at today, so let's get started with my favorite of the bunch...

Kubo And The Two Strings

Holy hell, how is this being done with stop-motion animation? Every frame of this trailer is absolutely beautiful to look at, but thankfully, there's not just style that one can gawk at in this trailer. I love how this trailer doesn't try to fill every second with hyperactive noise and/or jokes, but rather, establishes the plot, atmosphere and characters in a pleasant manner. All of that, plus, a roster of excellent voice actors (Charlize Theron! Ralph Fiennes! Rooney Mara! Matthew McConaughey!), and that excellent Beatles cover, and yeah, it's super easy for me to dub this as one helluva trailer. Consider Kubo And The Two Strings officially one of my most anticipated movies for the year.

Did ya like the atmospheric beauty of that Kubo trailer? Well, the rest of these trailers substitute that for bathroom humor and dancing to pop songs so....yay?

The Secret Life Of Pets

Marking the fourth trailer for The Secret Life Of Pets in the span of seven months (and we've still got five months to go until this movies actually released!), this one brings more of a concrete plot to the proceedings, depicting Max (Louie C.K.), a dog, feeling his life upended when his owner gets a new mutt, Duke (Eric Stonestreet). Basically, it's the same character dynamic Toy Story and Over The Hedge have already done, and this trailer really brings nothing new to the table in terms of plot points or gags. It also looks like they're getting as much mileage as possible out of that heavy metal poodle joke, huh?

The Angry Birds Movie

I was relatively kind to The Angry Birds Movie when its first teaser arrived back in late September, but that goodwill towards its marketing has vanished with this new trailer. All I can really say about this one is that if you've ever had the compulsion to see a movie where Danny McBride spits urine into the eager mouth of Josh Gad, it looks like we've got a movie for you!

Early candidate for most bizarre project of 2016? I'll say yeah. Was this made by someone nostalgic for the days of late 90's live-action Disney family films (the kind made on the cheap and quick like You Favorite Martian and the That Darn Cat! remake), cause that's the kind of cinema this trailer evoked to me. I kind of wish with a premise ripped straight out of a Tropic Thunder trailer parody they went with a more oddball premise than more of this "dad needs to learn to spend more time with his kid" tripe. I'm also pretty certain nothing Christopher Walken does here will top this beautiful insanity from Gigli:

Llewyn Davis And Steve Jobs Prepare To Destroy The World In First Trailer For X-Men: Apocalypse

That very first X-Men movie from 2000 has some pretty glaring problems, namely in how none of the titular heroes get very much development. In an age where each of the Avengers or Guardians can leave their mark on audiences in their ensemble films, the issue of characters like Storm, Cyclops and Jean Grey getting nothing of note to do becomes all the more noticeable. But there's no denying Hugh Jackman aces it as Wolverine, while Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as Xavier and Magneto are even better.
