Where'd You Go, Bernadette Is Shockingly Lifeless

After more than a decade doing independently financed arthouse fare, director Richard Linklater, one of the best directors currently working today, uses a film adaptation of the Maria Semple-penned book Where'd You Go, Bernadette as his return to more broadly appealing commercial fare, a domain he hasn't traipsed into since that Bad News Bears remake in 2005 that history has left to be forgotten. Linklater has been on an incredible hot streak in the 2010s with films like Bernie, Before Midnight and Boyhood, which makes it all the more profoundly disappointing how underwhelming his final feature of the decade ends up being. Linklater's well-known for making quiet films but they've never been as lacking in a pulse like Where'd You Go, Bernadette.

The Forgettable Despicable Me 3 Lacks Creativity And Laughs

As if it wasn't already clear with the last two follow-ups in this franchise, the Despicable Me movies can now stand alongside 21st century animated entities like the Shrek and Ice Age movies as franchises that started out with a great movie before descending into repetitive mediocrity. All the humor and even heart of the first Despicable Me has long since evaporated prior to this newest entry in the ongoing Gru saga, Despicable Me 3, entering theaters. Now, all we've got is references to past movies, a poorly handled plot and unfunny Minion antics. I'd say the franchise is on autopilot but that would indicate it's still moving. It's more like the Despicable Me movies have just been parked in a grimy parking spot for a few years now, not even doing the slightest bit of movement.

Ghostbusters Review

After a summer full of so many big budget clunkers, the incredibly entertaining Ghostbusters arrives like a bucket of cool water to a man stranded in the Sahara for months on end. Seriously, where was this level of fun, sincerity and care been in the likes of Independence Day: Resurgence and X-Men: Apocalypse? Leave it to Paul Feig and co. to follow up the directors exceptional Spy from last summer with a remake that's not relentlessly beholden to what's come before. There's a vibrant sensation of the new pulsating through Ghostbusters and it's a vibe that's impossible to resist.

Ideally, the career path for Saturday Night Live cast members once they leave that TV show is to become a major comedic movie star, which is just what the likes of Adam Sandler, Bill Murray, Will Ferrell and Eddie Murphy managed to do. Other have gone onto more unorthodox projects, which is what Kristen Wiig has chosen to do as an actor now that she no longer has be a part of Saturday Night Live. After starring in the 2011 hit Bridesmaid, Wiig has opted for more low-key dramatic opportunities, and considering the top-caliber work she's delivered in the likes of The Skeleton Twins and The Diary Of A Teenage Girl, it was a smart move for both her and moviegoers everywhere.

Minnie (Bel Powley) is such a unique and captivating protagonist, I feel like celebrating her nuanced personality, a triumph of top-caliber writing, with some sort of parade. She's 15, enthralled by everything related to sex and carries with her pervasive feelings of insecurity and a delightfully bold personality. She's the kind of person convinced she's fat and then proudly declaring in a letter to a man that's insulted her that some people enjoy, nay, adore larger women, thank you very much.

Extract, Extract, Read All About It!

Once I finished watching Extract, I was left with this peculiar sense of unfulfillment. It's not that this 2009 Mike Judge feature was particularly bad or something, it's just that, by the end, very little of notable value had really happened. The characters weren't that notable, the laughs weren't too hearty and the plot didn't feel particularly exceptional. In fact, the story, in its execution, struck me as fodder for an episode of a sitcom in its seventh season than a major motion picture.

Going from SNL to the world of film is a voyage many have taken to a wide range of results. Some like Adam Sandler found great success with the transition, while the likes of Jimmy Fallon found other avenues for their comedy. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig have certainly had their hits, especially Wiig with Bridesmaids, but they've chosen to do more offbeat projects in their spare time instead of starring typical comedy features. That approach is an excellent maneuver if it results in more movies like The Skeleton Twins.
