I Cannot Forgive The Nun For Its Sins Against Good Horror Filmmaking

The only thing that's gonna really scare you while watching The Nun is realizing how little effort has been put into this shockingly empty film. Considering not just how good the prior entries in the Conjuring saga have been but also the level of quality and creativity seen in recent horror films like Hereditary and A Quiet Place, The Nun's shallow attempts at horror filmmaking feel all the more egregious. Probably the highest compliment I can offer to it is that it at least gives the immensely talented Demian Bichir his first opportunity to headline a high-profile American film. Oh, and it's also better than The Bye-Bye Man, I suppose that's a plus.

Annabelle: Creation Is A Better Than Expected Fright-Fest

Though I've seen the two Conjuring movies, the original Annabelle from October 2014 is something my eyeballs have not witnessed, mostly because I heard only bad things about it and I wasn't as open to seeing horror fare on a regular basis theatrically as I am just three years later. As for the former detail, both film critics and audiences alike seemed to just not give much of a hoot about the movie once they saw it and if the director of Annabelle's follow-up feature Wish Upon is any indication of the quality seen there, well, I can understand the disdain. For the prequel Annabelle: Creation, director David F. Sandberg (director of Lights Out) is now at the helm and hey! Whaddya know, the movies actually some solid scary stuff!

The Conjuring 2 Review

Like other well-known sequels such as Garfield: A Tale Of Two Kitties and Muppets Most Wanted, The Conjuring 2 takes its supernatural activities to the U.K., to allow for a distinctly new environment for paranormal investigators, Ed (Patrick Willson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) to inhabit and, hey, if it also helps boost the box office in that country, then who's gonna complain? In the 1970's, the duo travels to the country to investigate a young girl who appears to be possessed by the spirit of a man named Bill Wilkins and the possession itself is causing all sorts of problems around the household, as your demons tend to do.

The Wheels On The Franchise Go Round And Round; Fast & Furious 7 Gets A Trailer

Similar to the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the most recent entries in the Fast & Furious saga derive much of their success from engaging characters. While I'd easily few, if any, of these protagonists have had an arc comparable to the likes of Tony Stark (I couldn't tell you what the names of characters played by Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson off the top of my head), but like those superheroes, the cast have an excellent chemistry that makes adventures seen in Fast Five and Furious Six super enjoyable.

Horror movies are in a rut. Scratch that, they've been in a rut for ages. For a time, the success of Saw led to most of the genre being inhabited by film solely focused on torture porn. Then Paranormal Activity became a phenomenon and everything had to be found-footage. The influence of The Conjuring is already being felt, with a large amount of features being centered around on spooky homes, families, strange noises and jump scares.
