Gone Girl Review

My procedure for movies based on books is to not give the literature that inspired the feature a read prior to seeing the film. It's not that I'm against books in general, it's just that I want to treat the film as a separate entity as much as possible. Gone Girl adds an interesting facet to this tactic though by having Gillian Flynn, the woman who wrote the book that this movie is based on, write the films screenplay. If her books are anything like this films writing in terms of quality, I'll be sure to check out any and all of her work ASAP.

Star Wars: Rebels Review

Sometimes, the original Star Wars movies strike me as some of the most underrated features in Hollywood. Now, that may sound ridiculous considering the massive pop culture impact those three movies had, but that kind of influence can make people forget that, beyond all the cool toys, video games, clothes, TV shows, three excellent films started  this whole mammoth franchise. Rewatching the original trilogy over the course of the past two weeks not only reminded me of how incredible those movies are, but it also put me in the perfect mindset to take in the first Star Wars project released from Disney, Star Wars: Rebels.

I love PIXAR, and I find it a shame they didn't have a film released this particular year, since there's so much I'd love to talk about and discuss regarding their films on this blog. Without a new feature to center my thoughts on their filmography around, I worry any PIXAR editorials I conjure up will be thought of as random or bizarre. It's sorta fun to see movie theater owners get all scared whenever a new way of experiencing cinema comes around. Back in late 2011, whenever Universal Pictures planned to put the long-forgotten comedy Tower Heist on Video-On-Demand services a few weeks after its release in select cities, theater owners refused to show the movie until the studio cancelled the plan. Universal wound up relenting, but a new disagreement between movie theaters and a studio seems less likely to end in a amicable manner.

Agents of SHIELD (S2E2) Review: Expand Your Horizons

A promising season premiere last week has led to a surprisingly successful second episode that may just be my favorite episode of this show so far. Focusing on characters for much of the episode turned out to be a smart choice, since this approach manages to rectify one of my complaints with last weeks episode, which was that the new characters on the show didn't get much development. Luckily, that changes this week with the newest additions to the show getting some time to shine in this episode.

A Tetris Movie Is Actually Happening And I Have An Idea For The Films Plot

Video games haven't exactly had the bets success being translated into film, but over the next few years, a resurgence of video game features will try to get more high-quality features in that particular genre created. The likes of Assassins Creed, Angry Birds and World of Warcraft will be brought to the big screen, and now Tetris can be added to the slate of upcoming films based on video games.

Liam Neeson Returns for More Taking In First Trailer For Taken 3

Liam Neeson has certainly been busy with a bunch of action flicks recently. While they're not the only films he acts in (he was one of the best best parts of The LEGO Movie, and he stars in the next Martin Scorsese Movie) he's been primarily known for doing films where he beats up bad guys while sayings things in that intimidating voice of his. These kinds of movies started due to the popularity of Taken, which is getting second sequel called (no joking here) Tak3n. The first trailer for it has just arrived and you can watch it below.

Gotham (S1E2) Review: The Cat Is Out Of The Bag

Well, with it's Pilot episode out of the way, it's time for Gotham to prove that it has more than just wink-wink references to future Batman villains up its sleeves. This episode actually doesn't do a great job proving that there's a ton more to this show than that, actually being a bit of a step back in terms of quality, though it did manage to incorporate a younger version of Catwoman into the proceedings in a satisfactory fashion.

I've only seen two films of Paul Thomas Anderson (I know, I know, I'm simply awful), The Master and Punch-Drunk Love. The Master I found to be a film I admired very much, especially the outstanding performances in it, but it kind of just left me cold overall. Punch-Drunk Love was actually pretty great, though I did feel it occasionally lacked focus. But man have I been anticipating his next movie, Inherent Vice, which just unleashed it's first trailer, which you can watch below.

One of 2014's Worst Movies, God's Not Dead, Condensed To Seven Minutes (From The Interwebs)

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR GOD'S NOT DEAD FOLLOW

There's few pieces of cinema this year, or really, ever, as vile and putrid as God's Not Dead. It played more like a parody of poorly done faith-based features rather than an actual attempt at creating cinema. As s Christian myself, the films relentless horrific treatment towards those of any other faith than Christianity was truly horrendous to witness. A new video has come up condensing the poor excuse for a film to just seven minutes, and you can give it a watch below.

Transparent (S1E1) Review

I find the world of streaming television endlessly fascinating. Ever since Netflix tore down all preconceived notions of how we consume television with House of Cards in February 2013, tons and tons of people have jumped into this lucrative market. PlayStation is having it's first TV Show, Powers, debuting in December. Yahoo! Screen has Community in 2015. Amazon has actually been in this streaming TV game for a while now, but Transparent is the first show that really makes me think they've got something truly special here.

The Equalizer Review

There was this brief trend in the first few years of the 21st century of revamping old TV shows for modern day films. Charlie's Angels started this phenomenon, and the likes of Starsky & Hutch, Miami Vice and The Dukes of Hazzard kept it going. It's slowed down in recent years, but the likes of Dark Shadows and 21 Jump Street show that Hollywood loves taking classic programs and revamping them as new movies. The Equalizer is the newest film adhering to this thought process, though even without watching any of the show, a quick glance to the original shows Wikipedia page confirms that this is less of an adaptation of that 80's TV show and more of a cinematic excuse for Denzel Washington to punch people.

This ones for a film that's getting a bit of an unconventional release; the subject of this trailer, Stretch, will be released on VOD platforms throughout October. I admire the fact that LAIKA seems willing to have a wide variety of tones in their cinematic work. While DreamWorks Animation proudly boasts of trying to make each film emulate the comedic stingily of Shrek as closely as possible, LAIKA has a distinctive atmosphere for each of their three features. Still, that kind of efforts doesn't excuse the prominent flaws found in The Boxtrolls, a film with plenty of charm, but a surprising lack of focus.

All Josh Turner Wants In His New Song Is Tranquility

Well Josh Turner, where on Earth have you been hiding? The country music singer has been laying low since 2012, which was pretty much the most inconsistent year for him in terms of what kind of success his singles achieved. He only released two songs in the year, but one of them, Time Is Love, went on to become the number one country song of 2012, a monumental achievement. However, his other tune that year, Find Me A Baby, became his 2nd lowest charting song ever. That kind of bizarre activity led to his brief hiatus that comes to an end with his new single, Lay Low.

Final Trailer For Big Hero 6 Is Full of Laughs, Actions And Emotion

One thing that I think is a major factor in Walt Disney Animation Studios resurgence is the much more effective marketing used for their features starting with Tangled. Starting with that 2010 film, trailers for the studios films were extremely memorable and also very well-made. The short trailer for Frozen last summer that simply showed Sven and Olaf engaging in shenanigans was despised by many on the interwebs, but I myself found it more than amusing and any time it played at a movie theater, that thing just went over like gangbusters.

Man, everyone was early with their box office predictions yesterday. Normally, everyone does 'em Thursday night, but nope, Hollywood Reporter and Box Office Mojo had their predictions up last night. Agents of SHIELD Season 2 Premiere Review

Note: This review contains mild spoilers for last nights episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The more that last nights hour long venture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe is thought about in my noggin, the more I realize that I really enjoyed it. It's got some shortcomings, but this particular story is such a change from many of last seasons episodes in its confidence, fun and dark story turns. The agents in Agents of SHIELD may have untold problems to face, but dealing with a lackluster episode certainly isn't one of them.
