This morning was a whirlwind of questions and wondering. It seems everybody wanted to know just how Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had managed to hit $65.5 million in its own opening weekend. I've kind of been desensitized to such hyperbolic announcements, and frankly, I believe the success of this new Ninja Turtles incarnation is more of a testament to the power of nostalgia than anything else.

Making $65 million in its opening weekend, it's the 10th biggest opening of 2014 and the 4th biggest August opening of all-time. Lacking Cinema In A Half-Shell

I've been obsessed with a bunch of items in pop culture in my time, but I must say, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are not one such item. Oh sure, I know about the TV shows, and characters like Krang and Bebop and Rocksteady, but that's more due to encountering actual fans of the shows and various movies. I do enjoy the puppets used in the original three movies if that counts for anything. So this new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles didn't have to jump through any kind of massive hurdles in my book...just be entertaining and fun for two hours.

Like fellow August film Guardians of The Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has to be one of the more bizarre films opening up in the summer of 2014. This is  movie, after all, where Megan Fox and Gob help a Johnny Knoxville voiced turtle fight a robot. And there's three other turtles. And pizza. And ninja stuff. Did I mention Tony Shalhoub plays a giant rat? That kind of blatant insanity has actually made me warm to the project, and the craziness continues with the movies "theme song" of sorts being unveiled today. In the style of the immortal Ninja Rap that Vanilla Ice belted out in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J and Ty Dolla $ign have collaborated to bring you this song, entitled Shell Shocked. A New Trailer For Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arrives....And It's Actually Good???

I've thought the overwhelmingly negative reception to this new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie has been extremely over the top for a while now. I have my concerns over the movie too (could they get someone besides the director of Battle: Los Angeles to handle this thing?), but so far, the film has looked like a perfectly fine summer film. Even the turtles redesigns haven't bothered me that much (the versions of these CGI creatures without noses that fans on the internet made look much creepier to me). Now, this new trailer has increased up my excitement even more, and you find out why by watching it below!

This is my most anticipated movie for the rest of the summer, and I must say, Disney is doing an excellent job spreading the word and making sure casual audience members are equally excited about it. Extremely distinctive ads playing up the quirky tone, humor, sci-fi action and big actors (John C. Reilly, Vin Diesel, Glenn Close and Bradley Cooper are in this) have started popping up, and if Disney can keep it up through all of July, than the film should play nicely.
