The Five Best 2015 Oscar Acceptance Speeches

Last nights Academy Awards ceremony was a predictable affair, with great films like Selma, Whiplash and especially Boyhood not getting as many awards as they deserved. In the end, Birdman took home the Best Director and Best Picture award, and while I wasn't a huge fan of the film (I found it audacious, but lacking in substance) I'm glad something a bit more unorthodox won at least. But that doesn't mean there weren't highlights of the ceremony, especially when it came time for Everything Is Awesome to be performed!

I must say, the announcement of the nominations for this years Academy Awards ceremony really took a spring out of my step. While it was great to see notable filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater receive long overdue recognition in the Best Director category, the lack of nominations for excellent people like Gillian Flynn, David Oyelowo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ava Duvernay, and of course, a movie like The LEGO Movie just helped reinforce how out of touch the Oscars are with recognizing truly great cinema.

Well now, American Sniper pretty much shattered all expectations didn't it? More than doubling the previous highest grossing January weekend of all-time, the Chris Kyle biopic debuted to over $89 million last frame, an extraordinary result that means it'll have a massive second weekend that'll have no trouble keeping three newcomers out of the number one spot.

Depicting people with Asperger's Syndrome in media has always been a bit of a difficult challenge, which is a disappointing to me as a person with Asperger's. Most shows fail to even pinpoint characters who display tendencies of Asperger's as actually having that symptom, rather nothing them as "special" or "funny" in order to avoid offending any specific groups if the portrayal comes off as a subpar. That tactic, which is utilized for the main character, Alan Turing, in The Imitation Game, can be put to good use, as this feature demonstrates.

Speculation over who would be playing Marvels Supreme Sorcerer has been running rampant for years. For a two month period starting around this years Comic-Con, Joaquin Phoenix was in heavy discussions for the role that went nowhere. Tons of actors were rumored for the role during the month, including Tom Hardy, Adrien Brody and Collin Farrell. One name that had come up numerous times, even during a Q&A session at Comic-Con with the actor, was Benedict Cumberbatch, who seems to the be the one who Marvel will get to play Doctor Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch has got quite a productive Holiday Season ahead of him. If he's not playing the villainous dragon Smaug in the final Hobbit adventure, you can also catch him playing a wolf companion to The Penguins of Madagascar. Or, you might just see him in The Weinstein Company's Fall drama The Imitation Game, where he plays Alan Turing, a real life figure who had was a pivotal part of World War II.
