Eight Months After It Concluded, The Hobbit Trilogy Is A Rollercoaster (Or Barrell) Ride of Varying Levels of Quality

 As hard as it may be to believe, in about five days time, it'll officially have been eight months since that trilogy of Hobbit movies came to an end. Yet, even with it, y'know, ending and all, news of the franchise still lurks about, with a recent development confirming that an extended cut of the final film in the series, The Battle of The Five Armies, would be rated R. That seemed like a peculiar decision to me, but then again, The Hobbit trilogy hasn't been the kind of cinematic creation that adhered to the rules or expectations people set for them. In some ways, that's a virtue, and in other very blatant ways, it's certainly a foible for the massive three-film long endeavor.

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Review

Big Battle Brings Brilliance Only Briefly

So now it ends, at least until Peter Jackson manages to convince the Tolkien estate to give him the rights to make a trilogy of movies focusing on Smaug as a student in college. With The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, Jackson concludes his trilogy of movies based on The Hobbit, and I must say I've found both of the previous films enjoyable, particularly The Desolation of Smaug. Alas, this one is easily the weakest Hobbit film, a middling affair spiced up by one or two good performances and some nice action moments.

Stephen Colbert Interviews Smaug The Dragon, And Yes, It's Incredible (From The Interwebs)

Stephen Colbert's final episode as the host of The Colbert Report (before he takes over for David Letterman in 2015) airs next week, but luckily his final episode will air just in time so he can still celebrate the release of the final Hobbit movie. As a man who happily announces his love for the world of Middle-Earth, Colbert celebrated the movies release last night by having none other then Smaug the dragon as a guest on his show. With Paramount Pictures announcing today that The Gambler will go into wide release on Christmas Day, that means the amount of movies opening in wide release between now and Christmas Day is nine. The newest feature film from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the duo who directed This Is The End, is called the Interview has been met by controversy ever since it debuted its first trailer. Considering the plot revolves around Rogen and James Francos plan to kill Kim-Jong Un, this shouldn't be too surprising. However, several North Korea officials considering the film an act of war certainly does feel like a massive overreaction to the project.

The Final Hobbit Movie Gets A Beautiful Trailer

I've actually really enjoyed these Hobbit movies. The first one's overlong, but there's still tons of great creatures and fun sequences to counter that. The second one though was truly fantastic, especially thanks to Smaug the dragon and some well done character moments. I've been eager for the third movie, and this trailer only heightens that feeling. Check it out below.

I'm not down in San Diego this weekend, but I am obsessing over everyone else live coverage of each and ever panel taking place at Comic-Con. And one of the biggest panels of the event happened just this morning; the one dedicated to Warner Bros. and their upcoming films. The three they noted they were bringing beforehand were Jupiter Ascending, Max Max: Fury Road and The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies.

Benedict Cumberbatch has got quite a productive Holiday Season ahead of him. If he's not playing the villainous dragon Smaug in the final Hobbit adventure, you can also catch him playing a wolf companion to The Penguins of Madagascar. Or, you might just see him in The Weinstein Company's Fall drama The Imitation Game, where he plays Alan Turing, a real life figure who had was a pivotal part of World War II. However, I do know plenty about it's production history, including the notable fact that it went under the title All You Need Is Kill for a long period of time until it was switched to its more generic current name. In a recent interview, I believe it was one of the producers who explained that the change was because of the sensitive atmosphere nowadays to violence.
