Independence Day: Resurgence Begins Its Box Office Trek With Decent Thursday Night Box Office

If there's one blockbuster this summer that's always felt like an unpredictable fellow, it's Independence Day: Resurgence (a movie that I'll be seeing this morning and hopefully will have a review up for that one as early as tonight). This Roland Emmerich movie has had meek marketing but it does feel like there might be more potential nostalgia for this property than there is to, say, see the Ninja Turtles and X-Men in perfunctory adventures just two years after their last romp. The Thursday night box office for the title doesn't seem to indicate quite how it'll do over the weekend, but it looks like it might be on track to at least avoid becoming a total dud over the weekend.

Finding Dory was always presumed to be a box office juggernaut in its opening weekend, but good Lord do these Thursday night numbers seem to signal that the film is well on its way to become a monster at the box office this weekend.

Allegiant Shows Worrisome Shrinkage In Middling Thursday Night Numbers

The third entry in the Divergent saga, Allegiant, got started last night with only OK results, taking in $2.35 million, a sharp decline from the Thursday night grosses posted by its predecessors. Divergent grossed $4.9 million at these screenings two years ago while Insurgent made $4.1 million at Thursday night showings just last year. To put that into perspective, that means Allegiant made 52% less than Divergent and 42% less than Insurgent last night. Yikes. Due to its smaller Thursday night numbers, allegiant will likely be less front-loaded than its predecessors, though it'll be interesting to see if it can crack $30 million for the weekend. Either way, it's unlikely to take away the number one spot at the box office from Zootopia, which has been performing like gangbusters all week and brought its domestic haul to $163.8 million yesterday.

Zootopia Begins To Roar With Sizable Thursday Night Grosses

Last nights Thursday night numbers are in for Zootopia (which I won't be seeing and reviewing until Tuesday), as well as London Has Fallen, though I'm still waiting on figures for the third new release of this weekend, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Anywho, looks like Zootopia is about be a huge box office hit is its Thursday night grosses are anything to go by. It grossed $1.7 million last night, a major improvement on all comparable titles. 

Goosebumps And Crimson Peak Blaze Uncertain Box Office Trails On Thursday Night

This weeks three new wide releases got their box office runs started last night, though it's hard to use their Thursday night numbers to foretell how exactly the films will do in the coming weekend for a variety of reasons. The largest of last nights performances was Crimson Peak, which grossed $855 thousand in Thursday night screenings. That's about 14% below the Thursday night grosses for Universal Studios most recent previous horror film The Visit, which grossed $1 million at these showings last month. It's likely Guillermo Del Toro's fanbase came out to see it last night, potentially making the film have a frontloaded weekend, though it's still too early to tell if that'll come to pass.

Inside Out Has Tremendous Thursday Night Grosses Pointing To Joyful Opening Weekend

Well, looks like Inside Out is off to a great start at the box office. The newest PIXAR venture is off to an incredible start financially, with its Thursday night grosses taking in $3.7 million. Two years ago, Monsters University made $2.6 million from Thursday night showings on its way to an $82.4 million opening weekend. If Inside Out were to follow that pattern, it would make $122 million for the weekend.

Jurassic World Off To Massive Start In Thursday Night Screenings

The park is open and boy howdy is it successful. Jurassic World made $18.5 million last night in Thursday screenings, setting the stage for a massive debut in its opening weekend. Man of Steels $116 million opening weekend will be easily be dethroned by Chris Pratt and his raptor squad at the biggest June opening weekend come this Sunday, but how much cash is this one gonna pull in for the overall frame?

Spy Starts With A Bang And Insidious 3 Off To Solid Start For The Weekend, While Entourage Heads Financially Downward

Melissa McCarthy better prepare for a great weekend, as her newest movie, Spy, got off to a great start at Thursday night screenings last night. Spy grossed $1.5 million last night, a 50% increase from the $1 million Thursday night grosses of McCarthy's 2013 vehicle The Heat, and a nearly 20% increase over the $1.3 million start for Tammy (it's hard to compare Spy's box office with that 2014 feature though, just because Tammy not only opened over a holiday weekend, but also opened on a Wednesday).

Box Office Analysis: Mockingjay Midnight Numbers Potentially Spell Financial Trouble

Part of me feels like I'm Chicken Little, saying "The Sky Is Falling!" by writing this, but I also feel like it's just sort of an interesting thing to talk about. The amount of cash it made from those though was a bit less than expected.
