Mortal Engines Is Nonsense But More Often Than Not, It's Enjoyable Nonsense

Mortal Engines is as imaginative as it is messy. Based on a series of books by Phillip Reeves, this story goes for broke in all the weirdness it can imagine occuring in a post-apocalyptic fantasy landscape where cities move around on wheels. You've got a giant vehicle that looks and moves like centipedes, the wardrobe's visual aesthetic seems like a collision of all kinds of different time-periods and an undead robot warrior all inhabiting the same story, which makes for a plot that doesn't hold together at all but at least it's usually different enough to be passably entertaining while it's unfolding in front of your eyes.

Watching a movie that can't seem to quite figure out what it is is a fascinating experience. Every movie, from Mad Max: Fury Road to A Bulldog Christmas, is such a massive undertaking requiring the help of countless human beings that it feels tragic to watch all that effort be put into the service of a movie like Like Father that's so confused about its own identity. Is this supposed to be a light-hearted comedy about a father and a daughter reuniting after many years apart? Is this supposed to be a darker drama examining the struggles of the two interacting with one another for the first time in decades? Or is Like Father simple hawking the services you can find on a Royal Caribbean cruise line? Perhaps it is all of them in addition to being underwhelming as all heck.

Atomic Blonde Is Frequently Entertaining But It Gets Too Bogged Down In Its Own Plot

In order to make the new action/thriller Atomic Blonde as awesome as potentially possible, it looks like the producers of this project swung for the fences and got two of the most influential figures of the mid-2010's American cinema action scene. David Leitch, one of the two directors of John Wick and one of the fight choreographers for the Captain America sequels (Chad Stahleski joined him on both of those duties), whose helped create a fresh modern-day style of cogently filmed and intense hand-to-hand combat, is helming this motion picture while his leading actor of the piece is Charlize Theron, star of one of the most iconic films of this decade in any genre, Mad Max: Fury Road. Alas, them working together doesn't result in a movie anywhere near as good as their best movies, though that doesn't mean Atomic Blonde doesn't have its own action-packed pleasures.

The Monstrous And Gruesome Effects Of The Cycle Of Abuse Are On Display In The Riveting And Unsettling Monster

Charlize Theron is talented in an abundance of ways but she’s particularly adept at portraying damaged individuals. She’s gone down that route a number of times in her career and whenever she does, she makes sure she’s not repeating herself, she’s examining different facets of a damaged human being. Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, for instance, is a whole different kind of damaged human being, one who has just much physical trauma in her past as she has mental trauma but she has an unfailing determination to her that motivates her sole purpose in life: to help others that are being abused by the ones who had committed awful atrocities to her.

What Can We Learn From This Summers Blockbusters?

Another summer has almost come and gone. Technically, the summer box office doesn't conclude until Labor Day graces our world, but unless We Are Your Friends becomes an Avatar-level box office phenomenon, I can pretty much guarantee you right now that Straight Outta Compton was the last moneymaker of this summer. In terms of summer blockbusters, there were highs and lows in terms of quality, with the more blatantly subpar projects like Terminator: Genisys and Pixels failing to lure in audiences, thank Heavens.

Typically, Labor Day signals the conclusion of whats typically the most financially lucrative part of the year for Hollywood, and just a week before that holiday arrives this year, you can pick up George Millers epic action film on Blu-Ray and DVD on September 1st and on Digital HD on August 11th.

A Sense Of Maturity Has Lifted This Years Best Blockbusters To Success

Summer blockbusters are looked down on by many as some sort of "mindless" type of entertainment, but that's giving the cinematic subgenre a mighty short thrift. Dating back to the very first summer blockbuster, Jaws, there's been a level of thought put into the best characters and plots of these movies that truly takes them to the next level. Would the original Star Wars trilogy be half as compelling without the complex arc that Han Solo undergoes? Even Independence Day, a movie that's got a plot whose dumbness would even give dirt a bad name intellectually, has its best moment hinge on the President of The United States give an inspirational speech even in the face of the immense amount of tragedy he's encountered.

It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Max World

Let me start out this review by saying one simple phrase: George Miller, Happy Feet Two is totally forgiven and then some. His directorial followup to that 2011 feature (and in fact only his third film he's directed in the 21st century) returns him to the franchise that made him a household name. Sometimes, returning to old cinematic stomping grounds reaps lackluster results (namely in regards to the ambitious but underwhelming fourth season of Arrested Development), but Millers doesn't stumble telling another Mad Max tale, instead soaring with one of the best action films in ages.

It's been nearly three years since Max Max: Fury Road started filming, but the film is almost ready to arrive to movie theaters everywhere. Seven weeks are left until the feature graces our eyeballs, and I for one can't wait any longer. I'm not down in San Diego this weekend, but I am obsessing over everyone else live coverage of each and ever panel taking place at Comic-Con. And one of the biggest panels of the event happened just this morning; the one dedicated to Warner Bros. and their upcoming films. The three they noted they were bringing beforehand were Jupiter Ascending, Max Max: Fury Road and The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies.
