Tuesday Night Grosses Show Magic Mike XXL Acing It, Terminator In Trouble

\
Magic Mike XXL kicked off its holiday opening weekend run last night with Tuesday night screenings that generated $2.4 million. That's up 20% over the original Magic Mike, which made $2.06 million back in 2012. Being a sequel with a built-in audience, it was all but assured that the movie would have larger grosses at these sort of screenings, but this is still a good sign that the movie will perform well over the holiday frame.

Even with these Tuesday night numbers at ones disposal, it's difficult to say how Magic Mike XXL will perform at the box office. Magic Mike went on to make $19.3 million on opening day, which feels unlikely for Magic Mike XXL to match, only because the original opened on a Friday and not a Wednesday. Still, it would be surprising if it wound up beneath $12 million for today, and it should play well throughout the next four days.

Meanwhile, Terminator: Genisys didn't make much of an impact last night, making only $2.3 million at Thursday night screenings. That's 23% below Terminator: Salvations $3 million start at midnight screenings in 2009, and 25% below the $3.1 million generated by the Thursday night screenings for San Andreas at the end of May 2015. Looking at other 2015 blockbusters, it's 43% below Insurgents $4.1 million Thursday night grosses and even 10% below Ted 2s $2.6 million start at Thursday screenings last weekend.

That Seth MacFarlane comedy only made $33.5 million over its opening weekend, a haul that includes its Thursday night numbers. Considering that Terminator: Genisys will almost certainly burn off demand on Wednesday and Thursday, it's doubtful it can get much higher than that, though to be fair, its still early to make claims as to how exactly it will play through the holiday weekend. Still, these numbers do indicate the movies in serious trouble and it'll require Arnold Schwarzenegger level stamina to shake off this poor start.
