Terminator: Genisys Will Not Be...Followed Up By A Sequel (Plus: New Release Dates For Baywatch And Star Wars Episode 8)

Yesterday, Disney threw the summer 2017 schedule into a state of turmoil, as they shifted Star Wars: Episode VIII from May 26, 2017 to December 15, 2017. Considering how well The Force Awakens has done over the holiday season, it's no shocker that they've moved the film up to this release date. I do wonder if the two titles Disney has planned for November will be shifting; Thor: Ragnarok might be OK on November 3 (Spectre managed to do a surprisingly high 2.85 times its opening weekend in an early November timeframe, putting it seven weeks ahead of The Force Awakens, the same amount of time between Thor 3 and Star Wars 8) but considering how poorly The Good Dinosaur held up against The Force Awakens, I'd imagine PIXAR's Thanksgiving 2017 film Coco might be searching for a more hospitable timeframe to open.

The Terminator Franchise Takes A Cue From Karate Girl Foe Ferruh By Refusing To Die

After Terminator: Genisys went bust at the box office this past summer (it managed to sell fewer tickets than the 1984 Terminator film domestically), it's no shocker that the Chief Creative Officer at Skydance (the production house that was responsible for this newest Terminator film), Dana Goldberg, attempted to put a happy face on the whole debacle. She confirmed that Skydance was going forth on their effort to create a universe of Terminator related media. It seems to have been forgotten as Genisys came out, but the initial deal with Skydance and Terminator included not only a trilogy of new films, but also a TV show chronicling young Sarah Connor growing up with the Terminator sent back in time to protect her.

In September of 2014, Paramount Pictures scheduled not one but two sequels to Terminator: Genisys, which at the time was 10 months away from release. Scheduling release dates for follow ups to yet to be released movies has become a common exercise for Hollywood in recent years, but there was special reason why these two sequels had been dated. Ya see, in 2019, the rights to the Terminator franchise returns to James Cameron, the man responsible for the first two entries in this saga.

Remember the opening of The Terminator, where a singular block of text alerts you to the most basic facts about this universe, and then lets an air of mystery hang over the experience of watching two different individuals land in 1984 Los Angeles in order to heighten the films sense of tension? Well, toss that out the window, and prepare for an avalanche of poorly delivered exposition, as several different beginnings occur at the start of Terminator: Genisys, as if director Alan Taylor liked all these different openings and couldn't bear to part with any of them.

Tuesday Night Grosses Show Magic Mike XXL Acing It, Terminator In Trouble

Magic Mike XXL kicked off its holiday opening weekend run last night with Tuesday night screenings that generated $2.4 million. That's up 20% over the original Magic Mike, which made $2.06 million back in 2012. Being a sequel with a built-in audience, it was all but assured that the movie would have larger grosses at these sort of screenings, but this is still a good sign that the movie will perform well over the holiday frame.

Terminator hasn't had the best of luck with it's modern day installments. The third one did decently at the box office,  but Terminator: Salvation disappointed in 2009. Now, a new movie attempts to take the franchise in a new direction. by recasting most of the well-known characters from the original and bring Arnold Schwarzenegger back to the franchise. Release Dates For Two New Sequels Ensure That The Terminator Franchise Will Be Back

The marketing campaign for it hasn't kicked in yet, so most people are likely unaware that a new Terminator film, called Terminator: Genisys will descend on movie theaters everywhere next 4th of July. Paramount Pictures is certainly hoping people show up for the film, and seems to be pretty confident people will adore it judging by the fact that they just scheduled two sequels to the movie 10 months before it even comes out.
