This 4th of July box office frame just keeps getting more and more exciting, as Inside Out scurried to the number one slot yesterday. It made $7.7 million on Thursday and should have no trouble being the leader of the weekend by a wide mile. Jurassic World was at number two with $6.8 million, bringing its total cume to $527 million, meaning it'll surpass The Dark Knight to become the fourth biggest movie of all-time sometime today.
Both of the new releases, meanwhile, flip-flopped from Wednesday, with Terminator: Genisys holding decently from Wednesday to Thursday, losing 28% to a $6.4 million haul. Magic Mike XXL, like its predecessor, fell off from its opening day, though there was considerable distance between it and Skynet yesterday, as it only made $5.7 million, a 38% decrease from opening day. With only a $14.5 million budget, Channing Tatum and the gang will easily make this a profitable venture, though it's hard to say if it'll beat Terminator for the three-day weekend.
The last time 4th of July fell on a Saturday was back in the olden days of 2009, but it's hard to use that timeframe as a comparison for how things will play out in the forthcoming weekend since, so far, the 2009 and 2015 box office frames have been quite different. Namely, when discounting the Tuesday night grosses from its opening day sum, newcomer Terminator held much better from Wednesday to Thursday than Ice Age 3 and Public Enemies. I only bring up this issue as a way to note that my projections for this coming weekend could totally be off. That being said, here's how things are looking at this coming box office weekend now that Magic Mike XXL and Terminator: Genisys have given me some solid numbers to work with.
1) Inside Out: $32 million
2) Jurassic World: $29.4 million
3) Terminator: Genisys: $24 million
4) Magic Mike XXL: $21 million
5) Ted 2: $14 million
