A lot of this summers big blockbusters (Ant-Man, Terminator: Genisys) have been releasing trailers recently, likely in order to make sure their shown on Avengers: Age of Ultron. This trend continues tomorrow when Jurassic World releases its new trailer, and now 20th Century Fox has gotten into the game by releasing a new look at the Fant4stic, er, Fantastic Four.
First off, the amount of hate this movies gotten has seemed...peculiar to me, especially the disgust for the project stemming from it not being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'd love to see all the Marvel characters under one roof as much as the next guy, but Fox has handled the X-Men characters well in recent years (I'll just forget that 2009 Wolverine effort) and this new trailer actually makes me confident director Josh Trank has something interesting up his sleeve.
Thankfully, this one adds a little variety in terms of tone to things, with the somber atmosphere of the teaser still having a presence, but there's a number of light-hearted moments that are great to see. Not only do they add some variety to the tone of the film, but they also help show off the various members of the team interacting, as well as giving some insight into their personalities. Look at Johnny Storm and Reed Richards humorous failed fistbump for perfect proof of how a small moment in a trailer can add a chuckle as well as a gaze into the dynamic of two characters.
It's also nice to see more of the powers of the team, with Reeds stretchy abilities getting ample screentime, as does The Thing. Actually, the latter character gets what may be the coolest moment in the trailer, when he drops out of a plane. That had me on the edge of my seat, not gonna lie, though I do wish it didn't conclude with a Miles Teller wisecrack since it seemed to be setting itself for a perfect moment for The Thing to bellow "ITS CLOBBERIN' TIME!!" Ah well, that'll hopefully be in the movie. I'm totally game. From the looks of these trailers, this summers superhero adventures are certainly bringing storytelling that looks both diverse and compelling.
