Box Office Predictions: Guardians Will Be Hooked On Top Of The Box Office

Only two new wide releases this weekend, but one of them is a doozy. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe feature Guardians of The Galaxy hits 4080 theaters after a huge marketing campaign. The James Brown biopic Get On Up will attempt to counter program Rocket Raccoon's exploits, but how much will each movie make? Read on to hear my predictions!

Guardians of The Galaxy is the tenth motion picture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which hosts beloved franchises like Thor, Iron Man, Captain America and The Avengers.  Guardians will hope to join their ranks this weekend, where many hope it will get the box office out of its slump by making tons of money. While the Guardians are relatively unknown to the public, they do have eye-catching visuals and a humorous attitude in the ads that immediately has made them very distinctive among more dour summer fare. To boot, the cast (which includes Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper) has been out in full force for publicity, raising awareness for the project.

Many think the movie could become the biggest August opener of all-time and surpass $70 million. As a die-hard Marvel fan, I'd love for that to happen, but as a box office observer, I do wanna note that we should be a bit calmer until we at least get some Midnight numbers.  Overzealous expectations can neuter an otherwise terrific box office performance (Iron Man 2 for instance "only" opened to $128 million in 2010, instead of breaking every record in the book like many had predicted) It won't be far off from biggest August opening weekend though, hell it may just squeak past Bournes third adventure for that title, and it'll also beat Thor and Captain Americas first outings opening weekends.

Get On Up will be one of the rare movies to try to counter the latest Marvel Studios venture (since The Avengers, only About Time has dared to also face a film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe on opening weekend) I don't see why studios don't try to counterprogram against big superhero movies considering Mamma Mia! wound up making $140 million in the face of The Dark Knight, but whatever. This biopic about James Brown is only going out in 2400 theaters, and the drama doesn't look enticing enough to get younger audiences not familiar with James Brown, but it should still make a bit of cash this weekend.

Quick note on last weeks new releases; both are gonna dip over 60% thanks to the massive presence of Guardians of The Galaxy. Lucy will probably dip the largest thanks to middling word-of-mouth, but it's made more than enough money to be dubbed a runaway success. Hercules will have a slightly smaller dip, adding onto its average, but slightly better than expected domestic box office run.

A Most Wanted Man, after taking in a nice $2.6 million last weekend in only 361 theaters will expand to over 700 theaters in hopes of even more financial success. It won't be huge, but I could see it crossing $3 million. Also, Fox Searchlight is putting Calvary out in 4 theaters. The film probably isn't destined for huge success (the dark premise will likely turn off many moviegoers) but it should do well in arthouse cinemas.

Below you can find not only my predictions for this weeks Top 5, but also my opening weekend and final gross predictions for this weeks newcomers.
