In this Thursday fixture, I Wanna See That!, I take a look at specific trailers that are both well crafted and have some kind of importance to them beyond just informing you a film is coming soon. This week, hold on to your butts, because I'm going to some amusement park Steven Spielberg made.
Steven Spielbergs popularity in cinema has been unstoppable for 39 years now, but 1993 may have been his finest hour. Before release his first Best Picture winner in the fall with Schindler's List, he took the world by storm by making the most realistic dinos ever put on cinema. 21 years later, Jurassic Park remains one of the best movies ever made, and with a quality film like that at its disposal, it's no wonder Universal was able to craft a terrific trailer for it.
The nearly three minute ad for Jurassic Park spends time to set up the enchanting world characters like Ian Malcom and Dr. Grant exist in, while interestingly never giving a good look at the films numerous dinosaurs. Taking a page from Spielbergs first big hit, Jaws, the makers of this trail have smartly decided that leaving things to the viewers imagination helps increase the tension. Smart choice there guys, as a foreboding atmosphere begins to creep in by the end of the trailer, especially the final shot depicting a raptor just outside a door.
But it isn't just thrills that this trailer manages to convey. The beauty of Jurassic Park is how it makes these creatures not just mindless killing machines, but actual animals, just following instinct. Sometimes that instinct leads to bad things, but sometimes it leads to beautiful things as well. That glorious scene where Ellie and Grant first discover the dinosaurs is briefly teaser here, as is a scene where Grant and the kids encounter a brontosaurus. Don't worry, the trailer says, thrills will be in supply here, but we've also got some things of stunning beauty to show you.
And of course, the trailer also makes sure to highlight the power of Jeff Goldblum. The charm of this man would be enough to power any city, and thankfully the trailer makes good use of his numerous funny lines from the movie. It's got beauty, scares, Goldblum, Spielberg and dinosaurs....what more could ya want out of a summer movie?
