In Box Office Predictions, I take a look at the forthcoming weekend and see how new releases and holdovers will fare.
Those blasted apes are off to take over our planet this weekend, and it looks like audiences won't mind a bit. As monkeys lunge for number one, the question remains as to how much this new Planes of The Apes film can make, even with Gary Oldman and trigger happy primates on its side.
Five years ago, if you'da told me that a new Planet of The Apes would be the critical darling of the summer, my immediate response would've been to laugh myself silly. Yet, here we are, where a new Planet of The Apes film has review comparable to the latest works from Wes Anderson and Phil Lord and Chris Miller. 20th Century Fox (which has been having a remarkable summer between mutants, dragon and John Green) has been marketing the hell out of this one, hoping that the love for the previous film will bring this new chapter to new financial heights.
Actually, a pretty big opening seems assured, since, again, the marketings been rampant, reviews are good and competition is minimal (Transformers: Age of Extinction will only just eke past $20 million this weekend). I'm not sure it can break records, but it should at least be in the ballpark of that Mark Wahlberg Planet of The Apes movie that was released in July 13 years ago. I'll go with a number just below that one, $67 million, just to be on the safe side, but this definitely has the potential to go higher than that.
This years new 4th of July releases really didn't make much of an impact, so don't be surprised to see Deliver Us From Evil to lose over 50%, and even Earth To Echo hasn't made a big enough impact to have stamina in the marketplace. Tammy's isn't just the only one of the newcomers from last weekend that opened to over $10 million, but it'll also be the only to surpass that amount this weekend, guaranteed, though not by much. I'm gonna say $11 million for Melissa McCarthy's latest, which puts it a respectable total of about $55 million.
And finally, Transformers: Age of Extinction. Normally, the arrival of a new major summer blockbuster like Dawn of The Planet of the Apes means certain annihilation for the Autobots. However, last Friday was the 4th of July, which diluted its grosses a little bit. It won't make a huge difference, but it may actually keep it from dipping from over 50%. I'll go with a 45% dip here, which should be more than enough to make it the seventh movie of the year to hit $200 million.
By the by, limited releases are tricky business, but I'm hoping for a monumental gross this weekend for one of my most anticipated movies of the summer, Boyhood. One of the best reviewed movies of all-time, hopefully this film (which I absolutely cannot wait to finally see!) should make a major splash, though how big specifically is hard to say. All I know is I'll be eagerly awaiting its results!
Below are not only my predictions for the three-day weekend box office, but also my predictions for the opening weekend and final gross for this weekends newcomer.
