An Inability To Be More Introspective Hinders Darkest Hour Greatly

Winston Churchill certainly has been a popular figure in pop culture lately, hasn't he? The likes of Michael Gambon, Brian Cox and John Lithgow have all portrayed him in major roles on various film and television programs over the last two years. Add the Joe Wright-directed Darkest Hour as the newest piece of evidence that Winston Churchill is having a resurgence in his modern-day pop culture presence as Gary Oldman, with the aid of extensive makeup work, becomes the newest actor to portray this former British Prime Minister who played a crucial role in a number of events during World War II.

Steven Spielberg Kicked Off His Career In Thrilling Style With Duel

Before The Post, before Schindler's List, before even Jaws and The Sugarland Express, Steven Spielberg directed Duel, a TV movie of the week that got expanded into an 89-minute-long feature-length cut for theatrical exhibition domestically and abroad (that longer cut is the one reviewed here). Spielberg's earliest directorial credits were all television work (including a segment in a horror anthology TV movie that starred Joan Crawford!) but this was the first time he got to be behind the camera on a project that reached the runtime of a typical feature-length motion picture, setting the stage for his career in directing theatrical films that was yet to come.

Hot Off The Presses Is Steven Spielberg's Entertaining New Drama The Post

Steven Spielberg's been directing movies since the early 1970's and Meryl Streep got put on the map as an actor of note forty years ago with The Deer Hunter. In the multiple decades they've both worked as prominent figures in the American film industry, it's utterly shocking their paths haven't crossed before now (though Streep did have a voice-over cameo in Spielberg's 2001 masterpiece A.I.: Artificial Intelligence). Such an odd lack of artistic collaboration is finally rectified for The Post, Steven Spielberg's new drama that pairs Streep up with Spielberg regular Tom Hanks for a timely tale of heroic journalism standing up to corrupt forces in the American government.

Oscar Isaac To Star In A New Steven Spielberg Movie!

Oscar Isaac has a most busy 2017 coming up! He's got supporting turns in new films from Alex Garland and George Clooney as well as lead turns in a little movie called Star Wars: Episode VIII and will likely play the main part in the new movie from Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. Add another movie to his busy slate, as Variety brings word that Isaac has entered talks to play the lead in Steven Spielberg's forthcoming movie The Kidnapping Of Edgardo Mortara (which will likely be retitled to a one-word title like Kidnapped).

War Of The Worlds Review (Classic Write-Up)

The horrific events of 9/11 thrust American pop culture into a new age marked by uncertainty, particularly when it came to American Summer Blockbusters. In the twenty-six years since Jaws was released, Hollywood had been churning out big-budget affairs each summer to capture the masses worldwide. Obvious concerns soon came up that this escapist fare would have to change in order to fit into a post-9/11 world, especially given that most blockbusters in the past five years had been attempting to replicate the success of Independence Day, which featured scenes of well-known buildings and landmarks being destroyed that wouldn't fly as cinematic reverie now.

Steven Spielberg Adds Another Movie (Starring Mark Rylance And Revolving Around Catholicism And Kidnapping) to His Bustling Slate

Steven Spielberg is not a man known for having a light workload. Remember how, back in 1997 and 1998, he had three directorial efforts (The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan) released in the span of 13 months?  Oh he'll take prolonged breaks occasionally but whenever he comes back he's always got multiple films up his sleeve. It looks like he's on one helluva roll right now, as, hot off the heels after releasing Bridge Of Spies last Fall (which you should see ASAP if you haven't yet, it's great), he's got The BFG lined up for this summer, Ready Player One set for March 2018 and he'll also be handling a fifth Indiana Jones feature in July 2019.
