The Animated Spider-Man Movie Gets Miles Morales As A Lead Character And Nabs Two Promising Directors

While this summer's Spider-Man: Homecoming will be a collaborative effort between Sony and Marvel Studios, there is a Spider-Man movie coming in December 2018 that's wholly a Sony effort. This untitled project is an entirely animated Spider-Man movie from Sony Pictures Animation that two fellows by the name of Phil Lord & Chris Miller are writing and executive producing. Today, Sony officially announced that the lead character of this movie would be Miles Morales, something that had been rumored for ages now but was a welcome sight to see made official.

Choosing Miles Morales as the lead of this film allows this new animated Spidey feature to separate itself from the live-action Spider-Man efforts that are still starring Peter Parker. In addition to a confirmed protagonist, it was also announced who would be helming this animated Spider-Man movie. Turns out, we've got two very promising individuals in charge of Miles Morales first movie. The first of these two directors is Bob Persichetti, one of the two screenwriters of the exceptional Little Prince movie from last year.

Joining him is Peter Ramsey, the director of Rise Of The Guardians. Aside from some light-hearted moments that felt overly forced, that 2012 DreamWorks Animation motion picture was quite memorable, an underrated movie with some extremely lovely animation and darker emotional elements that are handled with great deal of care. Ramsey showed off so much talent as a filmmaker with that movie and I always hoped he'd get another chance to helm another animation film despite Guardians not lighting up the box office. Thankfully, this new animated Spider-Man movie will put him back in the directors chair again and I'm excited to see what he and Persichetti do with Phil Lord and Chris Millers script. Man, there really are a lot of incredibly talented people involved in this movie, huh? The animated Spider-Man movie opens December 21st, 2018 and I eagerly await more news on this tantalizing project.
