In the history ofcrummy superhero movie creative decisions, outright shelving a nearly finished Fantastic Four movie, originally slated for a theatrical release in 1994, has gotta be up there. It's a bold move that left all the creative participants in the project shocked to the core and turned this Roger Corman-produced motion picture into a legend overnight. 25 years later, no official release of the project has seen the light of day, it's stuck in some vault somewhere at Marvel Headquarters. While we all wait for the Disney monopoly, er, corporation, to maybe possibly release this thing once and for all, the documentary Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman's Fantastic Four allows the creative participants of this fabled film to finally tell their experiences about being a part of the big blockbuster that never was.

For a movie that never even got a proper release, the backstory behind the 1994 movie The Fantastic Four has become borderline legendary. With famous producer Roger Corman executive producing the movie on a budget of only $1 million, the film was produced as a low-budget excuse for the producers to hold onto the film rights to the characters, something the cast and the rest of the crew was apparently unaware of. That means this take on Marvel Comics first family has languished in obscurity for twenty-three years while the trio of attempts at live-action Fantastic Four movies have come and gone to universally dismal reviews.

For ages, the new Fantastic Four movie has been surrounded in secrecy, and has drawn the ire of many on the internet not just because of that secrecy, but also because what little information has been released has become quite controversial. The movie has some kind of found-footage approach? Doctor Doom as a blogger? Cast members being urged not to read the comics that inspired the movie? Tons of stuff that's generated discussion, but I've tried to keep myself from passing too much of a judgement until some actual footage dropped.

While a fantastic trailer of Avengers: Age of Ultron has put that film on everyone's radar, the other two superhero movies for Summer 2015 have been flying a bit more under the radar so far. One of them, Ant-Man, has at least unveiled official photos from the production and some behind-the-scenes footage, while the other, The Fantastic Four, has given us zip, zilch, nada aside from a photo of a stand-in for the movies version of The Thing.
