Don't go into the woods alone, that should be up there with not opening the door to discover where that creepy noise is coming from as go-to pieces of knowledge for horror movie protagonists looking to stay alive. That's what the lead characters of The Ritual decide to do as they head off on an extensive hike through Sweden and they want to take a shortcut to help ensure they can get proper medical help in a hurry for one of their injured friends. Part of the group is the film's protagonist, Luke (Rafe Spall), who is racked with guilt over not doing anything to help his friend during a robbery that ended up costing that friend his life.

2017 has been "the best of times...the worst of times" for horror movies it seems. For every Get Out, It Comes At Night and It, we've also gotten utter dreck like Rings and Wish Upon. I foolishly thought those two films couldn't be beaten in terms of lowering the bar for horror cinema in 2017, but The Bye Bye Man somehow beats out a snooze-inducing Rings sequel to become the worst horror film of the year and possibly the worst 2017 movie that isn't 9/11. Not only is this a terrible motion picture but it's bad in amateurish ways that aren't particularly common among conventional theatrical releases in 2017.

Unimaginative Scares Are The Name Of The Game For Blair Witch

For full disclosure purposes, let me briefly run down my thoughts on The Blair Witch Project. I love that 1999 horror movie, it's got a sense of restraint to it that's absolutely terrifying, tapping into just how scary the feeling of being lost in an unknown environment can be in an extraordinary way. Though the feature was divisive upon its initial release, it made a bunch of cash at the box office, spawning a sequel the following year (which I haven't seen) and now a second follow-up entitled Blair Witch.
