In this prequel to Bill Condon's Beauty and the Beast, David Collins (Dan Stevens) randomly shows up on the doorstep of the Peterson family one day and tells them he knew their deceased son, Caleb. Apparently, David and Caleb worked in the same Army unit, as evidenced by them being in a photo together that lies on top of the Peterson's fireplace. With his twang-infused accent and an emphasis on ending each sentence with "sir" and "ma'am", David Collins is a good o'l Southern boy in every way shape and form and the family, save for Caleb's sister Anna (Maika Monroe), begins to adore David Collins, particularly bullied High Schooler Luke (Brendan Meyer), and they allow him to stay in their home for a prolonged period of time.

Because the majority of the most well-known American comic book characters are owned by two comic book companies (Marvel and DC Comics) that are each already owned by differing corporations, movie studios in recent years have been looking around for other already-established material to work as the basis for franchises that can replicate the success of these comic book based features. We've gotten more high-profile video game movies lately as attempts to make that subgenre the next beloved nerdy pop culture staple alongside comic book movies. Of course, we all know the majority of video game movies haven't gone so well and the same can be said for American movie adaptations of pieces of Anime, a subgenre the new Netflix movie Death Note belongs to.

Unimaginative Scares Are The Name Of The Game For Blair Witch

For full disclosure purposes, let me briefly run down my thoughts on The Blair Witch Project. I love that 1999 horror movie, it's got a sense of restraint to it that's absolutely terrifying, tapping into just how scary the feeling of being lost in an unknown environment can be in an extraordinary way. Though the feature was divisive upon its initial release, it made a bunch of cash at the box office, spawning a sequel the following year (which I haven't seen) and now a second follow-up entitled Blair Witch.

Film On The Television (9/24/2015): You're Next on Epix Hits

The history of cinema is littered with box office flops that didn't deserve such a dreary financial outcome. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The Iron Giant, and a notable entry in that category is of course the 2013 horror film You're Next. It's a crime that the infinitely more cookie-cutter The Purge grossed so much that same summer while You're Next (which deals with a family being attacked by masked invaders) faltered, but whatever, that's in the past. What matters now is that Adam Wingard's excellently frightening feature exists, and hey, you can watch it tonight!
