Collide Isn't All That Special But It's Got Moments Of Entertainment In It

Some movies set the right kind of box office records, others...don't. The latter case befell Collide, an action movie that had suffered numerous setbacks in its domestic release due to its original distributor, Relativity Media, going bankrupt. An original planned October 2015 release date faded away though Open Road Films picked up U.S. rights to the film shortly thereafter only for further release date delays (it was originally set for an August 2016 date before its eventual final February 2017 release date) to occur. Once it finally got released, it had the sixth worst opening weekend in history for a movie debuting in over 2,000 theaters and had the biggest second-weekend decline of any movie opening in wide release in North America.

Spotlight Review

Man oh man, do I love it when a movie like Spotlight lives up to the hype, especially when it carries a cast of this caliber and a director like Tom McCarthy. This guys 2011 feature Win Win was a real treat, an emotionally gripping and surprisingly layered tale that, to me, indicated that a truly special direct had entered the land of American cinema. I may be on the minority on this, but his follow-up project, The Cobbler, did not resonate with me at all, but luckily, Spotlight seems to be as clear of a sign as any that that Adam Sandler feature was an enormous fluke.

Another weekend, another opportunity for American Sniper to assume victory over your local movie theater. With February due to deliver several potentially huge hits, this last weekend of January seems to be the "calm before the storm", if you will, before some larger titles arrive. This means movie studios are not really releasing anything notable this weekend, but let's get to analyzing it anyway, shall we?

When The Lights, Go Down.....In The Ciiiiittttyyyyy

I've always had this terrifying fear of the dark, which I've come to believe stems from the natural human condition of not wanting to lose control. In the daytime, one can see everything and everyone, nothing can surprise me one thinks. But then nighttime arrives, and the entire world it seems has been covered in a shroud of mystery. Anything is possible in this darkened landscape, all bets are off. Being scared of such circumstances feels natural, but leave it to Jake Gyllenhaals main character in Nightcrawler, Lou, to embrace the dark and all the terror that comes with it.

Matthew McConaughey isn't the only actor experiencing a resurgence as of late. Jake Gyllenhaal has also had a string of well received roles lately. I thought he was a bit underwhelming in Prisoners, but I felt he was great in Source Code and the first trailer for Nightcrawler made me think this would be another impressive role for the actor.
