War For The Planet Of The Apes Is A Captivating & Grim Work Of Art

Third movies in big franchises or trilogies have a tendency to be regarded as frequently lackluster compared to their predecessors. I don't think that's entirely fair since we've had a number of great third entries in big series of movies in recent years (Lord of The Rings, Captain America, Iron Man and Toy Story all delivered strong third entries in their respective franchises), yet such a thought process in pop culture. It's almost become a tradition at this point for blockbusters to feature sequences involving large scale destruction, whether you're film made in the 70's (an era where star-studded disaster movies were all the rage) or modern day big-budget efforts involving Superman, Godzilla and Transformers. Nothing wrong with some big scale chaos utilizing crumbling cities, but some of these films seem to forget that there are people living in these areas where such showdowns occur. The domains where flashy climaxes occur become more of a pile of ash by the time the credits than a proper environment for human beings to live in

What Is 10 Cloverfield Lane? Who The Hell Knows, But The Trailer For It Is Pretty Memorable

Let's time travel back to the year 2007, when an eleven year old NerdInTheBasement saw Transformers on its second day of release. My first theatrical PG-13 experience, I got a thrilling rush when, prior to the screening, the trailer for the R-rated Superbad played. Woah! An R-rated movie! What a time to be alive! Sure, it was the green-band trailer and so no nudity, drug use or explicit swearing was to be found, but still, it was the trailer for what was pretty blatantly an R-rated feature film. Could it get any better than this??

When Rise of The Planet of The Apes came out in 2011 and became a financial and critical success, there was one thing everything was eager for; a sequel. After all, this prequel to a certain beloved 1968 film (yep, you guessed right; all these movies are prequels to Bullitt) leads to a very definitive conclusion that could still have many great stories to tell leading up that ending. With a new director (Matt Reeves), a new cast of humans and a greatly expanded budget at their disposal, the movie utilizes all of its resources to create a fantastic movie, one that's got thrills and thoughtfulness to spare.
