"What's old is new again" as they say, and while it's not a perfectly equal comparison, it must be said that the world of America in 1976 (the year in which Sidney Lumet's Network was released) does bear a great resemblance to America in 2017. A historically catastrophic President? A recent grisly war that has not produced the sort of triumphant victories America is accustomed to in its foreign affairs? People looking for answers in their entertainment? Some variations of all those ideas always exist in human society but they're particularly potent in both 1976 and in the modern era, making Network one of those amazing movies that's both a perfect time capsule of the era in which it was released and also something that feels incredibly relevant multiple decades after its initial release.

The Terminator Franchise Takes A Cue From Karate Girl Foe Ferruh By Refusing To Die

After Terminator: Genisys went bust at the box office this past summer (it managed to sell fewer tickets than the 1984 Terminator film domestically), it's no shocker that the Chief Creative Officer at Skydance (the production house that was responsible for this newest Terminator film), Dana Goldberg, attempted to put a happy face on the whole debacle. She confirmed that Skydance was going forth on their effort to create a universe of Terminator related media. It seems to have been forgotten as Genisys came out, but the initial deal with Skydance and Terminator included not only a trilogy of new films, but also a TV show chronicling young Sarah Connor growing up with the Terminator sent back in time to protect her.

In a short period of time, John Oliver has quickly become one of the most notable personalities on television, with his HBO program Last Week Tonight With John Oliver using the venue of late night television to address serious problems the world if facing in a humorous, but effective manner. John's an incredible dude, and I'm so happy to hear he's gotten not just a season renewal, but a renewal for two more seasons!

Better Call Saul Episode One Review

I freely admit I was nervous about Better Call Saul, a spin-off program derived from the Breaking Bad character Saul Goodman (played by Bob Odenkirk). Spin-offs have had mixed results on television, and that kind of track record left me skeptical about this shows chances for becoming something notable, especially since, if it was truly a stinker, it might tarnish the legacy of Breaking Bad, one of the greatest television programs of all-time.

There are many TV shows I haven't given a watch despite people telling me how awesome they are. Mad Men is one such program, and with its return imminent, I'm sure me never watching Twin Peaks will make me a monster in the world of pop culture. But one television phenomenon I've never watch is The Walking Dead, a show that I at first didn't watch due to my uneasiness with scary stuff. But maybe, just maybe, I'll catch up with it on Netflix before its newly announced sixth season.
