Phantom Thread Is Clothed In Delightfully Off-Kilter Material

If you thought any of Paul Thomas Anderson's past films were too unusual for your tastes, buckle up, because he's put the weird into overdrive for his newest motion picture, Phantom Thread. Taking cues from filmmakers ranging from David Lean to Alfred Hitchcock to Yorgos Lanthimos, the newest Paul Thomas Anderson motion picture is an utterly bizarre concoction that shares more with past efforts made by this filmmaker than just being on the unorthodox side. Like other Paul Thomas Anderson movies, Phantom Thread is thoroughly fun to watch, specifically in how it channels Anderson's own Boogie Nights in having this escalating sense of craziness in its plot.

If there's one common fixture in the last three movies made by Paul Thomas Anderson, it's an affinity for going into decades past of American culture and probe at the darker underbellies of these time periods. Back in 2012, for instance, he released The Master, a movie set in the 1950's, a time period typically associated with lovely picnics and white-picket fences that was here used as a backdrop as the story for a World War II soldier trying to find a post-combat purpose in the world. The film he made just prior to The Master, There Will Be Blood, is also a part of this trend, with this 2007 directorial effort of Anderson's being set in the first few decades of the 20th century.

In this day and age of franchises, where even Snow White & The Huntsman can get a high-profile theatrical sequel, it's interesting how long-standing horror movie franchises seem to be the one place Hollywood decides to show some frugality. Interestingly, 2009 and 2010 are the two years where Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees were last seen slicing up teenagers. Oh sure, sequels are in development, but Michel Myers and Jason Vorhees have been stuck in development hell for ages. Pinhead? MIA at the box office for years now. Chucky? Aside from one direct-to-video sequel back in 2013, he's also been missing for the past decade. At least Leatherface will be back to terrify audiences in his own prequel depicting a younger Leatherface in High School.

I've always found the 2016 feature The Huntsman, a prequel to 2012's Snow White & The Huntsman, to be a peculiar project. I didn't hate the aforementioned fantasy film from three years back, and it did make almost $400 million worldwide, but I didn't feel like it had that much of a fanbase to warrant a continuation. Apparently, it has, with the project being developed for several years now and finally being released next year, specifically on April 22, 2016.
