Well, to quote Harold Hutchins from Captain Underpants, "Here we go again!" Yes folks, it's once again time for Marvel Studios to put on its dog-and-pony show at the San Diego Comic-Con. If there's one thing the companies known for beyond taking shamefully long to get either a person of color or a woman to headline one of its movies, it's for putting on one h*ck of a show at Comic-Con. I'll be live-blogging the festivities which will start at 7:30 PM central time! A Thor: Ragnarok trailer is all but guaranteed to show up but may we also see some new casting announcements for Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man And The Wasp and Captain Marvel? Considering this is going to be the longest Comic-Con panel the companies ever put on, anything's possible!
Like the Warner Bros. panel, this Marvel Studios panel was moderated by one Chris Hardwick. The dude introduced the panel which got kicked off by....
PAUL RUDD AND MICHAEL PENA FROM ANT-MAN AND THE WASP
Paul Rudd and Michael Pena doing a recap of all the events that have previously transpired in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's like their very own Star Wars opening text crawl! Amidt all the shenanigans (which included Paul Rudd holding up a David Hasselhoff photo when mentioning Nick Fury) we got a massive casting reveal for next summer's Ant-Man And The Wasp....Michelle Pfieffer is playing Janet Van Dyne!!! Excellent choice, Pfieffer's a great actor, the idea of her bouncing off of Michael Douglas is a tantilizing one, she's an excellent pick. Other casting announcements included Hannah John-Carmen being revealed to play The Ghost, a baddie from the comics, and Laurence frigging Fishburne is playing the superhero Goliath!!!!! All that plus Walton Goggins as Sonny Busch! This cast really is just coming up aces!
And hey, Speaking of female-led MCU movies...
CAPTAIN MARVEL
We got our villains for this movie confirmed, those cosmic mainstays of the Marvel comics, The Skrulls! The shape-shifting aliens will be making their live-action movie debut (though their Ultimate Comics counterpart, The Chitauri, appeared in The Avengers!) in Captain Marvel's first ever movie! Also revealed about the movie is that it'll be the second period piece in the MCU as Captain Marvel will take place in the early 1990's, with one clear signifier of this being that Nick Fury will have two eyes! Interesting choice, hope it gets properly utilized in the film and isn't just a pointless background detail ala the 1980's setting in X-Men: Apocalypse.
With those revelations out of the way, it was then time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe release due to be released next. I'm of course talking about...
THOR: RAGNAROK
First off, as a massive Hunt For The Wilderpeople fan, I'm so elated that it was revealed today that director Taika Waititi was bringing actor Rachel House back from that film to play a pivotal role in Thor: Ragnarok! That's so great! Also revealed in the panel; The Elders Of The Universe will be introduced into the MCU here by way of Jeff Goldblum's The Grandmaster while Hulk will be speaking in this film! He'll apparently have "the vocabulary of a two year old" in the film itself. I'm intrigued to see what that's like. Oh, and they showed off a new trailer that you can watch below!
Not gonna mince words here; I love this trailer. I love the stylized action with cohesive editing, the colorful sets, the go-for-broke fantasy aesthetic of it all, the glorious cast, oh my God, this trailer is just so great. Who knows if the movie itself will be this good but for now, this trailer really is just amazing and something I'm gonna be rewatching all night.
What comes next in the MCU after Thor: Ragnarok?
BLACK PANTHER
The cast of this one and director Ryan Coogler showed up at Comic-Con to show extended scenes from the movie, including one that showed the futuristic tech that T'Challa uses to put on his suit. Not too much new stuff to show here but only because they put out a trailer just a month ago and also had shown off footage at D23 last week.
But there's still more to come...
AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
Before they wrapped up for the evening, Kevin Feige and Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo came out to show off the same footage for Avengers: Infinity War they premiered at D23 last weekend. The trailer's so packed with details that descriptions of the footage brought out brand-new moments of coolness I had never heard of when they screened the footage last week like Vision in a prison cell. Sounds like it was a large-scale way to close out the panel!
