Prior to 2017, we've been through six different Spider-Man movies, ranging from the cheap-o days of the 1977 movie joint that never even got a U.S. theatrical release to the Sam Raimi classics of the early days of the 21st century to the two Marc Webb movies that proved to be the nadir of the Spider-Man on the silver screen (even that 1977 movie was better than The Amazing Spider-Man 2 since it didn't feature Spider-Stalking). What on Earth could a new iteration of the character possibly bring to the table? Shockingly, quite a bit actually. Spider-Man: Homecoming turns out to have a lot it brings to the table that ends up making it a thoroughly unique take on the Spidey mythos, one with a lot of fun and zest to its name as well.

For the last two years, I've been trying to parse out exactly who director Jon Watts is. Ever since he got the gig to direct Spider-Man: Homecoming back in June 2015, I've pondered how a guy who had been flying so under my radar managed to nab one of the most coveted directing gigs in Hollywood at the time. While technically the indie horror film Clown was the first feature-length movie Jon Watts ever helmed, Cop Car was released first in a number of countries including the United States and was the motion picture that apparently caught the attention of Sony/Marvel to the point that they handed him the reins to Spidey.

Tom Holland Is The New Spider-Man!!!

It's been the question on everyone's mind ever since Marvel announced they'd gotten the rights to have Spider-Man in their movies...who would be the new version of Peter Parker? I'd been rooting for Tony Revelori to get the role (he proved he could pull of a meekish personality and deliver one-liners beautifully in The Grand Budapest Hotel), but it appears Marvel has gone in a new direction for the character. Marvel has just announced Tom Holland has been chosen to be the new Spider-Man, with Jon Watts directing the 2017 Spider-Man feature!
