In Back to the Future, Marty McFly delivers a lively performance of Johnny B. Goode at a 1950s prom. Similarly, Ang Lee unleashed his unapologetically unique Hulk move onto the public in June 2003. The creative ambitions of McFly and Lee were clear. They both knew exactly what they wanted and were executing their creative visions to match those ambitions. Unfortunately, both the teens at that 1950s prom and summer moviegoing audiences in 2003 weren't receptive to what McFly and Lee, respectively, were dishing out. "I guess you guys aren't ready for that, yet," McFly said once his Johnny B. Goode performance went over like a lead balloon, "But your kids are gonna love it!"

If there's one thing director Ang Lee loves, it's ambition. His 2012 mega-hit Life Of Pi was a small-scale movie that mostly confined itself to a boat starring an unknown actor and a CGI tiger while Brokeback Mountain is one of the most high-profile American movies to deal with the typically taboo topic of homosexuality. Even his foray into superhero movies, the 2003 Hulk film, has one of its core plot points revolve around spousal abuse and the effect that has on a young child's psychology. You give Ang Lee a box to play in, he's gonna think outside of it and then some, no question about it.

It's those broken places that The Avengers: Age of Ultron likes to focus on in its main heroes, specifically in how the damage they experience on both an emotional and physical level affects those around him. Heady stuff for a summer blockbuster? Well, just because your a movie that has several moments of big things going boom, that doesn't mean you can't have some thoughtful ideas to go with your spectacle. Hulk smashing buildings isn't nearly as fun if I can't get into his psyche after all.

My God, the promotional campaign for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Comic-Con is all wrapped up now, but the memories will live on forever, namely the ones that occurred about 24 hours ago, when Marvel Studios took the stage to make another memorable panel in Hall H. The studio is pretty much the king of Comic-Con at this point, and they affirmed such a status by showing off footage from The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man.
