Brie Larson's Directorial Debut Unicorn Store Is A Totally Unique Delight

Unicorn Store is all about Kit (Brie Larson), a young artist who is struggling with the whole conventional grown-up routine. Her relationship with her parents, Gladys (Joan Cusack) and Gene (Bradley Whitford), is a bit strained, her art is constantly looked down upon and she feels like she's not living up to what her peers have accomplished. Seeking to correct this, she receives a job making copies of old magazines at a standard advertising agency. It's the kind of normal grown-up job she's typically avoided, but Kit has decided now is the time to put away childish things. At least, that's what she thinks until she gets told by The Salesman (Samuel L. Jackson) that she has the chance to own her very own unicorn.

All the way back in 1938, Superman's debut appearance in Action Comics #1 defined our modern conception of the superhero. Part of that definition was the establishment of a superhero secret identity. Superman was an all-powerful God-like entity with a multitude of superpowers, but his human alter-ego was Clark Kent, a nerdy newspaper reporter who no one could ever imagine running particularly fast, let alone leaping tall buildings in a single bound. Plenty of other superheroes soon followed with their own alter-ego's in hand, most notably Batman, who by day is a charismatic billionaire. In the 1960s, Spider-Man took things to the next level by making the alter-ego of a wall-crawling superhero be a puny teenager who gets bullied at High School.

Sugar Is A Departure From Typical Sports Movies And Is All The Better For It

A whole decade before they directed box office juggernaut Captain Marvel, Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck helmed the sports drama Sugar, which takes a premise that could easily be fodder for a run-of-the-mill inspirational sports movie and takes it in a whole other direction. The Sugar of the title refers to a nickname given to Miguel Santos (Algenis Perez Soto), a baseball player residing in the Dominican Republic who, along with every other local baseball player, dreams of getting recruited for rookie training in the United States of America. That's not a turn of events that befall just anyone, but Miguel manages to score such a rare opportunity to train with the Kansas City Knights in Iowa.

Remember how twelve years ago Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer turned Galactus into a gigantic cloud because the prospect of doing a comic book accurate version of the gigantic space God in a purple hat was apparently too goofy for a live-action movie? Well, welcome to March 2019, where the modern cinema scene is so immersed in oddball comic book cosmic details that Captain Marvel can open, with no introductory text crawl or some expository voice-over narration, with its titular lead superhero living a day-to-day life on the alien planet Hala under the names Vers while Academy Award nominee Jude Law portrays her mentor who talks about the "Kree Supreme Intellegence" and warns his pupil about the dangers of shape-shifting Skrull aliens.

Here's All The News Announced At The 2017 Marvel Studios Comic-Con Panel

Well, to quote Harold Hutchins from Captain Underpants, "Here we go again!" Yes folks, it's once again time for Marvel Studios to put on its dog-and-pony show at the San Diego Comic-Con. If there's one thing the companies known for beyond taking shamefully long to get either a person of color or a woman to headline one of its movies, it's for putting on one h*ck of a show at Comic-Con. I'll be live-blogging the festivities which will start at 7:30 PM central time! A Thor: Ragnarok trailer is all but guaranteed to show up but may we also see some new casting announcements for Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man And The Wasp and Captain Marvel? Considering this is going to be the longest Comic-Con panel the companies ever put on, anything's possible!

Captain Marvel Gets Directors In The Form Of Duo Ryan Fleck And Anna Boden

There's one movie left in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that has yet to get a director...Captain Marvel. Considering the idiosyncratic choices to helm recent Phase Three movies like Ryan Coogler and Taika Waititi, I was super duper intrigued to see who they got for movie. Apparently eyeballing a female director (which Hollywood should be doing way more often given the dismally small number of women who direct major Hollywood features), the hunt has been on for months with plenty of notable names being brought up. Now, we know who's doing....directing duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck!

Ant-Man 2 Confirmed For 2018 As The Marvel Cinematic Universe Updates Its Release Schedule!

I was pretty certain we'd get an Ant-Man 2 sometime down the road, but I was thinking they'd hold off on such a project until after the Avengers: Infinity War project was completed. After all, both of those movies will almost certainly feature Ant-Man, and his presence in those two films (as well as next year's Captain America: Civil War) could boost his profile significantly, leading to his solo movies performing at higher levels of box office, just like how Captain America, Iron Man and Thor's post-Avengers solo outings did far better business than they're pre-Avengers entries.

A large number of new superheroes will be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the next years, and interestingly, most of them have already been cast. Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange, Chadwick Boseman will bring Black Panther to life and Tom Holland will be the MCU version of Spider-Man. But one notable hero is left to cast; Captain Marvel. This character has been one that many have been clamoring for to receive a motion picture, and with such a film arriving in 2018, I thought it might be interesting to look at five actresses who would do the character justice!

This morning, I woke up, and as usual, checked my phone, seeing what was new on the interwebs. The first app I opened was Instagram, where I saw a post declaring that Spider-Man was back home at Marvel. It took a few moments for my brain to register this...was this real? Am I dreaming? A quick check on everywhere, from Slashfilm, to Comingsoon.net, told me that this was no dream. This was an all-too real reality.

Perhaps the biggest piece of Marvel's massive news today (and this is saying something considering Inhumans and Captain Marvel films were announced) was the official date and information given to Black Panther.
