As the X-Men cinematic franchise prepares to expand next year, hopes are high for this 15 year old film series. In addition to a new X-Men feature (Apocalypse) due out next May, new spin-offs centered on Deadpool and Channing Tatum as Gambit will help take advantage of all the storytelling possibilities this universe has. Now a new project has emerged; a film centered on The New Mutants!
This new movie will be directed by Josh Boone, who directed The Fault In Our Stars (which, like all the X-Men films, is distributed by 20th Century Fox), and he'll also write the project with Knate Gwaltney. In the comics, this first iteration of this group consisted of five mutants; Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot and Wolfsbane. Interestingly, one of those mutants (Sunspot) has appeared in an X-Men movie (X-Men: Days of Future Past) before, so if they adapt the original roster of this team in the movie, there's a chance they'll keep Adam Canto around to play the character.
This one's in early stages of development, so I doubt we hear anything more on it, but considering how high of a regard I hold X-Men: Days of Future Past in, you can imagine how excited I am by the idea of more movies focused on adventures with new characters coming to life.
