It's fairly obvious that director Gore Verbinski carries a soft spot for the twisted and morbid. His debut directorial effort, Mouse Hunt, was a family movie obviously intended to be just a Home Alone knock-off, so of course, he starts off the feature with a funeral procession and a separate on-screen heart attack in short order. His Pirates Of The Caribbean movies frequently diverged into spooky terrain and don't forget about the random cannibal elements (including ravenous rabbits) in The Lone Ranger. After nearly fifteen years of playing in the real of PG & PG-13 fare, Gore Verbinski's newest movie, A Cure For Wellness, offers him the chance to just go nuts with all the twisted story content he can imagine.

Yesterday, Disney threw the summer 2017 schedule into a state of turmoil, as they shifted Star Wars: Episode VIII from May 26, 2017 to December 15, 2017. Considering how well The Force Awakens has done over the holiday season, it's no shocker that they've moved the film up to this release date. I do wonder if the two titles Disney has planned for November will be shifting; Thor: Ragnarok might be OK on November 3 (Spectre managed to do a surprisingly high 2.85 times its opening weekend in an early November timeframe, putting it seven weeks ahead of The Force Awakens, the same amount of time between Thor 3 and Star Wars 8) but considering how poorly The Good Dinosaur held up against The Force Awakens, I'd imagine PIXAR's Thanksgiving 2017 film Coco might be searching for a more hospitable timeframe to open.

No one involved with Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides gave two shits about it. Normally, I'd refrain from engaging in the fallacy known as hasty generalization, but here, it's impossible to escape the deafening lack of vigor on display in everything from the acting, plot, action sequences, hell, even Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow (so entertaining even in the weakest parts of Dead Man's Chest) feels more often than not tired in this particular adventure, which is not the sort of impression you want your zany and unpredictable leading man to convey.

And so, we come to the end of the original Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy, with At World's End closing out the four year long tale of Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan....at least until Disney decided to go back this world for the dire fourth movie. By contrast to the second movie being far worse than I remembered it being, this third entry in the saga is surprisingly much better than I remember it being, even if it still suffers from an overly convoluted structure that the second film similarly struggled with.
