Saw Is Back And Its Eighth Movie Is Stealing Its Title From The Second Tron Movie. That Bastard.

In this day and age of franchises, where even Snow White & The Huntsman can get a high-profile theatrical sequel, it's interesting how long-standing horror movie franchises seem to be the one place Hollywood decides to show some frugality. Interestingly, 2009 and 2010 are the two years where Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees were last seen slicing up teenagers. Oh sure, sequels are in development, but Michel Myers and Jason Vorhees have been stuck in development hell for ages. Pinhead? MIA at the box office for years now. Chucky? Aside from one direct-to-video sequel back in 2013, he's also been missing for the past decade. At least Leatherface will be back to terrify audiences in his own prequel depicting a younger Leatherface in High School.

Saw Review (Classic Write-Up)

For a good chunk of the first decade of the 21st century, Saw had a firm grip on the realm of horror in pop culture. It's immense success spawned a number of imitators in the "torture horror" niche, namely the Hostel and Collector franchises. Such a subgenre faded almost as soon as it arrived, with the far cheaper to execute (no pun intended) found footage and supernatural horror fare managing to be the scary king of the multiplex in the years since the franchise concluded. And despite how prominent the franchise was for six years, there's been surprisingly little clamor for it to be rebooted or return to theaters, with the only attempt to wring more cash out of the franchise in recent years, a 10th Anniversary theatrical re-release of this first Saw film, bombing spectacularly last year.

Lionsgate Hopes To Prove With Future Movies They're More Than Just The Hunger Games Franchise

For eons now, six movie studios have been designated as the six "major" studios in town. Those six are as follows: Disney, Universal, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Sony/Columbia and Warner Bros. It's not that you can't have a movie studio beyond those six, on the contrary, there are a large amount of independent studios like The Weinstein Company, Open Road Films and STX Entertainment leaving their mark on the film industry. But those six are the ones who bring in the most revenue and release far more movies than typical independent studios (Warner Bros. typically releases 20+ movies a year).

Teaser Trailer For Final Hunger Games Movie Is Uber Secretive

The final Hunger Games movie is on it's way, but there's still eight months to go until Katniss Everdeen goes off on her final adventure (though who knows if those Hunger Games prequels and sequels Lionsgate is mulling will involve her). So it's not a shocker that the first trailer, which you can watch below, for the production plays things close to the chest, though the complete lack of any footage from any of the Hunger Games movies is a mild surprise.

A slow news day today (nobody wanted to compete for media attention with the Paul Blart 2 trailer coming out later today) doesn't mean there's nothing to talk about in the world of pop culture. The super duper buzzed drama Whiplash finally enters over 400 theaters this coming weekend, and CBS Films is now getting some distribution help from Lionsgate. But here's something guaranteed to brighten up your day; Bradley Cooper doing some voice work for Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of The Galaxy. Check it out below!

The Skeleton Twins Review

Going from SNL to the world of film is a voyage many have taken to a wide range of results. Some like Adam Sandler found great success with the transition, while the likes of Jimmy Fallon found other avenues for their comedy. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig have certainly had their hits, especially Wiig with Bridesmaids, but they've chosen to do more offbeat projects in their spare time instead of starring typical comedy features. That approach is an excellent maneuver if it results in more movies like The Skeleton Twins.

Well, Gone Girl just became the biggest opener of David Finchers career, and Annabelle furthered The Conjuring franchise in a significant manner. But we still have four more weeks of October to week, and tons of new releases to look at it. So, I Was On Netflix: You're Next

I heard an unending amount of buzz on You're Next prior to its August 2013 release, with numerous people calling it the next big thing in the world of scary cinema. Lionsgate gave the movie a late August date that had worked well for past horror movies, Michael Fassbender wore an animal mask from the movie to the Comic-Con panel for X-Men: Days of Future Past, reviews were great, it all seemed to be working in the movies favor. Then, it bombed horribly at the box office and it just sort of faded away. What a shame. The movie certainly lives up to the hype as one of the more inventive horror flicks in ages.

The Expendables 3 Review

What can Sylvester Stallone do now? I'm not asking this as some mean or snarky remark, I'm honestly wondering, what can this guy do now? I'm sure he could so some excellent drama if he so desired, but he seems to content to just riff on his legacy in films like Grudge Match and Escape Plan. Both of those were terrible, and while The Expendables 3 is better than those, it's still a forgettable excursion that needed more of entertaining characters to keep its pitiful screenplay afloat.

A Most Wanted Man Review

I Kind Of Wanted More

The tragic loss of Philip Seymour Hoffman earlier this year affected the cinematic community profoundly. Luckily, the mans excellent work will continue to be cherished by moviegoers for untold ages to come. Even in a film like A Most Wanted Man, Hoffman still puts in commendable work that is more than worth noticing. I wish the rest of the movie followed suit though, as it's all just a bit of a slog that doesn't really get interesting until it its finale.

The Trailer For Mortdecai Shows Johnny Depp Like You've Never Seen Him Before...Quirky And Humorous

I like Johnny Depp a lot and I'm certainly not alone. The dudes got a ton of successful movies under his belt, and while some weren't good (Charlie And The Chocolate Factory namely), roles like Jack Sparrow and Rango had him subverting the norm to create fantastic and engaging characters. His recent movies (especially Transcendence) have been lacking, but as I pressed play to watch, for the first time, the trailer for his next feature film Mortdecai, I hoped the trailer would show promise of Depp restoring some luster to his career.

Box Office Analysis: The Only Thing More Eternal Than Death And Taxes? Hollywoods Love Of Horror Sequels

The Purge: Anarchy hit 2800 theaters this past weekend and was by far the highest grossing of the weekends three new releases. Sure, it didn't break any records, or even beat out it's predecessor, but it got better reviews from both critics and audiences and was only $5.7 million behind the first movie. Plus, Universal and Blumhouse Productions have already tripled their budget for the film (it cost $9 million). Obviously, this is a win for both studios and I expect The Purg3 to hit theaters next July.
