The Accountant Is Plenty Watchable But Also Sort Of A Mess

The Accountant is kind of an oddball movie. There's a lot of big actors wriggling around on-screen inhabiting a script that feels like it could have easily belonged to some sort of Steven Seagal and Charles Bronson action vehicle in the 1980's. It's an interesting dichotomy that actually makes the film watchable but it's kept from being truly as fun as it could have been by a script that seems to be hopping all over the place tonally and there's also the problem of the story being plagued by pervasive predictability.

The Darkness Review

For every modern day horror movie like The VVitch, You're Next and It Follows that dares to upend conventions of the genre, you're bound to find hundreds of other horror movies like The Darkness that seemed to have fallen right off an assembly-line. Seemingly crafted for the sole purpose of being found on Netflix by horror movie junkies at 1 AM, these are the kind of films that drudge up cliche after cliche without even daring to dress up said tropes in a fancy get-up or even a modicum of craft. Honestly, The Darkness strikes me as so paint-by-numbers that I'm seriously shocked Blumhouse Productions went through all the trouble of giving it a theatrical release.

A slow news day today (nobody wanted to compete for media attention with the Paul Blart 2 trailer coming out later today) doesn't mean there's nothing to talk about in the world of pop culture. The super duper buzzed drama Whiplash finally enters over 400 theaters this coming weekend, and CBS Films is now getting some distribution help from Lionsgate. The photo above was posted on James Gunns Facebook on Friday, and man did it make my entire day. As someone on the Autism spectrum (Aspergers Syndrome to be exact), it just warmed my heart to see someone else on the spectrum finding inspiration in one of the many delightful characters from Guardians of The Galaxy. Seeing that movie again yesterday, I was once again amazed at just how all around excellent it is, and honestly found it to be even better than I remembered. As the crowd departed the auditorium after that delightful post-credits scene, I had a big grin on my face from the entire film, as well as realizing that two of the Guardians are perfect cinematic representations of people on the Autism spectrum.
