Could As Above, So Below win the weekend? I think....nah. The marketing feels clumsy and all-over-the-place, though Labor Day has been kind to horror films in the past. I'm thinking this one gets to $15 million over the three-day weekend, but just misses winning it all. The number one movie looks like it'll be Guardians of The Galaxy again, which should have an extremely small drop thanks to the financially beneficial Labor Day weekend. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will likely come in behind both releases, but will probably lose as little as 10%, which should be good enough for third place.
The November Man sort of just exists, as another vehicle for Pierce Brosnan to do Pierce Brosnan things because he's Pierce Brosnan. Reviews are average, but there might be just enough nostalgia value in seeing this past Bond fight evil to get it past $10 million. Also, a new release flying under the radar is Cantinflas, a Spanish film that would normally not garner much attention, but is being released by Lionsgate over Labor Day, the same movie studio and release date that launched 2013's Instructions Not Included to massive success. The premise of Cantinflas isn't quite as compelling as the father-daughter shenanigans of Instructions Not Included , but let's keep an eye on this one, as it could make a decent amount of cash this weekend.
Last weeks new releases probably won't make too much noise this weekend, though When The Game Stands Tall will probably have one of the smallest second weekend dips for a movie this year. If I Stay will probably avoid as massive 60+% dip thanks to the holiday weekend, though Sin City: A Dame to Kill For probably will have that kind of tremendous fall simply due to terrible word-of-mouth. One holdover that actually should fare well is Let's Be Cops, since there's dearth of comedic material in the marketplace. We're The Millers lost only 2% over this Labor Day weekend last year, and while it will dip a bit larger than that, it could still lose under 20%, an excellent hold.
There's actually not too much to talk about otherwise, as very little is happening in the world of limited release. Chef is coming back into wide release, but I doubt it'll make too huge of an impact. A little more exciting is the return of Ghostbusters to theaters, 775 theaters to be precise. That one should do OK over the weekend, though the minimal amount of promotion for it could hurt its business.
