Hot Off The Presses Is Steven Spielberg's Entertaining New Drama The Post

Steven Spielberg's been directing movies since the early 1970's and Meryl Streep got put on the map as an actor of note forty years ago with The Deer Hunter. In the multiple decades they've both worked as prominent figures in the American film industry, it's utterly shocking their paths haven't crossed before now (though Streep did have a voice-over cameo in Spielberg's 2001 masterpiece A.I.: Artificial Intelligence). Such an odd lack of artistic collaboration is finally rectified for The Post, Steven Spielberg's new drama that pairs Streep up with Spielberg regular Tom Hanks for a timely tale of heroic journalism standing up to corrupt forces in the American government.

Despite Steven Spielberg being one of the most prolific figures to ever grace the medium, he does have a few movies that seem to not be as noteworthy in the public eye. 1941 is one of course, while his mid-1980's drama that introduced the world to Christian Bale Empire Of The Sun also feels like it's slipped through the cracks and maybe it's just me, but his 2005 Best Picture nominee Munich also feels like it could be given that distinction. Another one if his films in that category is his 1997 feature Amistad, which I first heard about in the book The Men Who Would Be King (a book chronicling the rise and fall of Spielberg's movie studio DreamWorks) where it was looked back on as both an awards and financial disappointment in the history of the studio.

The filmography of Steven Spielberg is so stuffed to the brim with excellence that you're bound to get a wide variety of answers regarding which movie is his best. Some will choose one of his numerous high-quality blockbusters, another will choose one of his intimate dramas, there's oodles of strong cinema to choose from. One that had always struck me as garnering a more mixed reception as a kid was A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, a 2001 science-fiction drama that had terrible box office legs in its initial theatrical release and one that I always saw getting mocked for being overly cloying or its ending not working or any number of similar complaints. Over the years though, it seems to have become more and beloved, with the.....unique, let's say, critical personality Armond White being one of the film's most ardent supporters.
