The Lighthouse Is Like If Phantom Thread and Fritz Lang Had A Twisted Horror Movie Baby

You know how a recurring job interview question is "Where do you see yourself in ten years?" I'm sure if you had asked Robert Pattinson that question in 2009 when he was doing the press rounds to promote The Twilight Saga: New Moon, he would have listed a hundred different answers before thinking "I'll be in a black-and-white horror film with Willem Dafoe set entirely at a lighthouse." It may not be what Pattinson would first think of as his future career prospects circa. 2009, but The Lighthouse, like much of Pattinson's post-Twilight work, is both audacious and exceptionally well-made. Put simply, this new film from The VVitch helmer Robert Eggers is like if Phantom Thread, Swiss Army Man and Fritz Lang all had a super warped child.

The Favourite Is A Wickedly Fun Take On Traditional Period Pieces Dramas

I am really starting to dig this trend of costume period piece movies like Phantom Thread, Colette and now The Favourite that have their period-era characters talk and act like modern warts-and-all human beings. Though they didn't pioneer this trend (why, the Comedy Central TV show Another Period has been doing this for quite some time now), it is a nice departure from the norm in cinema where the default mode of doing these films is to depict historical time periods in a sacrosanct manner that has people acting as proper as possible. That's not quite the approach taken by The Favourite, which has more in common with a Marx Brothers comedy or even, in terms of ribald dialogue, a period-era version of a raunchy Seth Rogen comedy than it does with your average Stephen Frears film.

Phantom Thread Is Clothed In Delightfully Off-Kilter Material

If you thought any of Paul Thomas Anderson's past films were too unusual for your tastes, buckle up, because he's put the weird into overdrive for his newest motion picture, Phantom Thread. Taking cues from filmmakers ranging from David Lean to Alfred Hitchcock to Yorgos Lanthimos, the newest Paul Thomas Anderson motion picture is an utterly bizarre concoction that shares more with past efforts made by this filmmaker than just being on the unorthodox side. Like other Paul Thomas Anderson movies, Phantom Thread is thoroughly fun to watch, specifically in how it channels Anderson's own Boogie Nights in having this escalating sense of craziness in its plot.
