Could Goku, World War I Soldiers And Chainsaw-Wielding Nicolas Cage Be Crucial To The Future of Cinema?

Prior to this week, I had no clue that the 20th Dragon Ball motion picture, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, even existed, let alone was making its domestic bow in movie theaters everywhere just yesterday, but that's just what happened when Dragon Ball Super: Broly bowed in 1,250 locations on January 16th,  2019. Though playing on one or two showtimes per theater, the feature managed to handily become the biggest movie in America on Wednesday with a massive $7 million opening day sum, enough to already make it the tenth highest-grossing Anime feature at the domestic box office. The movies domestic distributor, Funimation, will be keeping the title in theaters through this weekend with more frequent showtimes to accommodate just how popular the newest Goku adventure is.

Hausu Is As Immensely Entertaining As It Is Endearingly Strange

One of the most puzzling criticisms you can offer up a movie is that it was "too strange". Not that the strangeness didn't work for you or that the strangeness was poorly executed but that the mere fact that a movie was strange was just off-putting. I saw this a lot when Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle In Time came out earlier this year and was greeted by numerous reviewers in a negative fashion for being "too weird". What's wrong with being weird or strange? I've already seen about 115 movies that have come out in 2018 and let me tell you, having the gall to embrace strangeness is a Godsend in a movie, it helps your story stand out from the pack. Maybe the strangeness won't work in execution, but I'll always tip my hat to a movie that opts to swing for the fences on weirdness rather than sit in the sidelines of normalcy.

Mandy Is The Best Kind of Cinematic Madness

I feel like Scrat from Ice Age would love Mandy because this movie is absolutely nuts. The newest directorial effort from filmmaker Panos Cosmatos, Mandy can be best summed up as being the demented spawn of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall Past Lives and John Wick. Though it may echo two other recent features, and its editing and atmosphere certainly evoke past auteurs of dream-like motion pictures like David Lynch, make no mistake about it, Mandy is very much a one-of-a-kind creation that constantly had me either questioning what the hell I was even watching or cheering on the mayhem transpiring on-screen. It's two hours of the most excellent kind of madness, the kind that was tailor-made for Nicolas Cage's gifts as an actor.
