The First Half Of The First Season Of The Tick Is A Surprisingly Funny And Enjoyable Affair

It isn't just in your local multiplex that superheroes have become a recurring presence, the boob tube is also an entertainment locale where superheroes can be found in heavy doses. Each of the five major networks, save for CBS, have at least one superhero show on their airwaves while all sorts of cable networks have their own superhero TV shows. Some of these programs, in order to fit into the smaller budgeted nature of TV shows, are deconstructions of superheroes focusing on normal people, like NBC's Powerless or the Playstation Network's one stab at original programming Powers. The Tick is kind of sort of being made in that storytelling mold but its savvy knowledge of superhero tropes is used more for good-natured rib poking than outright mockery. Plus, it's refreshingly not at all ashamed of embracing the sillier aspects of superheroes, one of a number of positive elements of this program.

The Big Sick Has A Severe Case Of "Excellent-Comedy-Itis". Hope It's Contagious!

MILD SPOILERS FOR THE BIG SICK AHEAD 

2017 has not been kind to the American comedy. Talented actors like Charlie Day, Will Ferrell and Dwayne Johnson have headlined comedies that have ended up being some of the worst movies of 2017 thus far and more often than not these comedies have ended up producing far more boredom than giggles. Heck, I'm saying that without having seen two of the worst reviewed comedies of 2017 so far, CHiPS and Sandy Wexler. But for those like myself that were thinking there was no hope for laugh-oriented cinema this year, here comes The Big Sick, a Judd Apatow-produced feature that actually does bring a whole bunch of yuks as well as thoughtful character work and terrific performances. A 2017 comedy with all of those elements in spades? To quote Smash Mouth, "What a concept!"

Wiener-Dog Is An Agreeable If Unexceptional Todd Solondz Effort

When it comes to household pets, I'm more of a dog and guinea pig person with a hankering for certain cats (preferably ones that don't act like complete jerks, which is difficult because, y'know, cats) sprinkled in there for good measure. While I've never owned the breed of dog commonly referred to as a wiener dog, I've had plenty of experience with these cute critters over the years and can attest firsthand to their loveable nature. No wonder filmmaking Todd Solondz was compelled to make a feature film, appropriately titled Wiener-Dog, centered on this particular breed of canine.

The Neon Demon Is A Glowing Example Of Thoughtful Absurdity

I pity the poor human being tasked with writing out the plot summary that has to go onto the back of the DVD's and Blu-Ray's of Nicolas Winding Refn's The Neon Demon. What can you possibly type up that'll adequately prepare a prospective buyer/renter of this title for what they're in for? The Neon Demon isn't just littered with moments that are difficult to recount due to their absurdity, the film practically thrives on seeing how far it can push moviegoers in terms of throwing an ever escalating series of unorthodox images and scenes in their direction.

Transparent (S1E1) Review

I find the world of streaming television endlessly fascinating. Ever since Netflix tore down all preconceived notions of how we consume television with House of Cards in February 2013, tons and tons of people have jumped into this lucrative market. PlayStation is having it's first TV Show, Powers, debuting in December. Yahoo! Screen has Community in 2015. Amazon has actually been in this streaming TV game for a while now, but Transparent is the first show that really makes me think they've got something truly special here.
